how stuff works.com : radial engine

the ge fdl diesel engines i have at work are setup like a radial, with master and articulating rods [like a harley engine i think too. . ]
Harleys use a knife and fork rod arrangement - both rods ride on the crankpin journal.

The master/articulated rod arrangement is commonly used in Cooper-Bessemer engines, the Cooper-Bessemer FVBL vee-configuration Diesel engine being the ancestor of the modern GE locomotive engine. In this arrangement, unlike the Harley, the articulated rod pivots on an articulated rod pin located in the master rod, not on the crankshaft journal.

Radial engines are a trip. Amazing that some guys way way back designed those things with a slide ruler. I make my living keeping those old engines flying. (we fly C-46s & DC-6s)

Saw a guy take a journey thru a TF-34 (S-3 motor). Happened on Indy during the iranian hostage ordeal,Then helped the VS squadron wrenches wash the motor out a few hrs. later, It left a lasting impression on me that never goes away.
