well the race gods were not smiling on me yesterday , N. E. dragway thought they would try something new for opening day and it was a complete clusterf$%& to say the least .

when i got there about 9am there was a huge line waiting to get in , i had my dad drive my bee also hoping to get in a run or 2 while the truck cooled for the exhaust swap , and it overheated sitting in the line for about 45 minutes , not pretty.

i did reinstall the stock system on friday nite , that took 4 hours and i can say that there is a big difference between the 2 with the VA on board , i see almost 2 psi less of boost , and if boost is horsepower then there is about 20 hp less if the 1 psi = 10 HP rule applies , plus the boost does not come up as fast and the EGT climbs to 1000 really fast , i don't think it went over 900 with the 4".

anyway when i got some info as to why i only moved 75 feet in 45 minutes it was because of the tech line , which was about 150 cars ahead of me , plus they were giving little kids rides down the 1320' in racecars , another new thing for this year . but to sum up what a crapfest it was , a friend of mine that got there at 7:50 am still had not had his car teched at 10 am , and he didn't get his first and only run down the track till about 1pm!!! , needles to say good thing it was only 5 bucks to run .

so i will reattempt to get in runs on wednesday nite , i may have to change the format of my runs from 3 stock , 1 stock with va , 3 with jre and 1 with jre and va to maybe 2 and 1 and 2 and 1 , time permitting , or i will wait till next saturday or sunday when i will have 8 hours of potential racing to do it , its gonna be a long day and to keep things somewhat consistent i want to do all the tests on the same day.

sorry for the novel, i'll keep everyone posted

well i made it to the track today , went alone so i was unable to get any video , wish i had a video of my last run , loaded up the convertor and when i mashed the throttle the tires broke loose and the rear kicked out , let off the loud peddle, back on it and they spun some more , but was my best reaction time of the day . 829 sec ... this was with the JRE 4" and the VA ... to the results #ad
#ad
#ad

i'm trying to be short and sweet but feel free to get a beverage and something to eat , if anyone wants to see the whole thing , i'm going to scan my time slips and can email them , i made "17" passes ...

i made 3 passes bone stock with amsoil air filter , truck weight first run was 6820 lbs, they made me empty stuff out of the bed... off the street, engine temp 190, tailgate up , no tonneau cover

pass 1 wgt 6820 lbs

reaction time ... 1. 491
60 ft ... 2. 908
330' ... 7. 874
1/8 mile ... 12. 072
MPH ... 58. 21
1000 ft ... 15. 723
1/4 mile ... 18. 793
MPH ... 73. 46

pass 2 removed plywood and a couple of things from bed weight down to 6756 lbs
23 minutes between runs , eng temp 190 boost 18. 5 EGT 950
react time ... 1. 538
60 ft ... 2. 735
330 ft ... 7. 636
1/8 mile ... 11. 806
MPH ... 58. 54
1000 ft ... 15. 436
1/4 mile ... 18. 496
MPH ... 73. 71

pass 2 was the best run stock ,pass 3 was 1 hr later , a chevy puked on the track and a cleanup followed , plus they made me wait , engine cooled down and i didn't think to warm it up ... the times for pass 3 :
60 ft ... 2. 917
1/8 mile ... 12. 108
MPH ... 57. 76
1/4 mile ... 18. 868
MPH ... 73. 08

i never saw much more than 18 psi boost and EGT never went over 900

then i made a pass bonestock , except i put on the VA CPC ... YEEEHAWWWWW!!! #ad
hold onto your hats ... better than i expected

pass 4 wt 6740 ,after a 1 hour delay for lunch , i did however heat the engine up to 190 , no loading of the convertor and tailgate up saw boost only go to 18. 5 and EGT climbed to 950 plus

react time ... 1. 271
60 ft ... 2. 581 . 154 increase
330 ft ... 7. 209 . 426 increase
1/8 mile ... 11. 166 . 640 increase
MPH ... 62. 26 3. 72 mph increase
1000 ft ... 14. 560 . 876 increase
1/4 mile ... 17. 430 1. 066 INCREASE
MPH ... 78. 31 4. 60 MPH FASTER

i only did 1 run stock exhaust with the VA , i think this is an OK increase for the price , i need to find a desktop dyno to figure out the hp increase .

then i went in the pit and swapped exhaust and removed the VA ( i did this ALONE and made my next run in 57 minutes #ad
) , i will give a quick summary of those 3 runs , this is taking to much space here is best pass but all passes saw MPH increase to over 75. 15 mph, boost up to 19. 5 + ...
pass 5 EGT 950 wt. 6746 lbs

60 ft ... 2. 791 stock exhaust better . 055
330 ft ... 7. 666 stock exhaust better . 030
1/8 mile... 11. 786 . 020 better than stk ex
MPH ... 59. 39 . 85 mph faster
1000 ft ... 15. 348 . 088 better than stk ex
1/4 mile... 18. 344 . 152 better than stk ex
MPH ... 75. 28 1. 57 mph FASTER than stk

pass 6 times were . 2 secs slower but MPH for 1/8 mile was 59. 42 MPH and for 1/4 was 75. 64 for a total increase over stock exh of 1. 93 MPH FASTER wt was 4 pounds less than pass 5

pass 7 was even slower, boost was only 19. 0 and EGT was about 925 but 1/4 MPH was 75. 15 mph

then i put on the VA CPC ... YEEEHAW !!!

the wind at this point had picked up to probably 30 to 40 mph . but it was a tailwind , made 10 passes , a few were no good because of debris blowing thru the beam but the times just got better , the BEST RUN WAS pass 12 weight was 6730 boost 19. 5+ and EGT 950+ ,convertor loaded to about 1800/2000 rpm to build boost

react time . . 1. 021
60 ft . . 2. 341 . 394 increase OVER stk
330 ft . . 6. 884 . 752 increase OVER stk
1/8 mile . . 10. 767 1. 039 increase OVER stk
MPH . . 63. 59 5. 09 MPH FASTER
1000 ft . . 14. 079 1. 357 increase OVER stk
1/4 mile . . 16. 882 2. 386 INCREASE over stk
MPH . . 80. 03 6. 32 MPH FASTER

i had 4 other runs in the 16. 9 /78. 85 to 79. 47 mph plus range with the weight between 6732 and 6715 , second best was a 16. 918 /mph unknow timing goofed it said 54 mph , the 1/8 on this run was 10. 784 @63. 62 mph

to sum it up the JRE 4" is good for . 15 sec and almost 2 mph the VA CPC and JRE 4" is good for 2. 38 secs and 6. 3 MPH ... all i can say is i NEED MORE BOOST and a MYSTERY SWITCH , locking the convertor right after it shifted into third would have netted better times in all configurations ...

ted sorry that this turned into more of a VA CPC boosting session , but your system does show an increase , which means MORE HORSEPOWER , #ad

Very interesting! I noted that the exhaust equals only a . 15 increase alone, and the VA only equals 1. 06 on it's own, but put together they yield 2. 38! I'll bet the same will be true of the injectors, boost module, and elbow. The total is more than the sum of it's parts, eh? I may have to follow you back down to NH when we're done, the track runs sound like a blast! How much did the track time run ya?

arcticat , it only cost 25 bucks to race on saturday , track opens at 8 am and shuts down at 5pm , race as much as you dare , i had 4 runs that the timing was goofed because of debris blowing thru the lights , but all in all it was a good day , now i want to sell my superbee and get a 2 wheel drive 24V and make a drag truck , you should see the look on peoples faces when i pull up in a diesel , at the end i was racing a guy in a 2 wheel drive 1500 ss/t ram , he was only . 6 and 5 mph faster and i was 2000 lbs heavier , this combo in a 2 wheel drive 2500 would probably run in the 15's ... . i can't wait till i get the injectors in , i think though that i need to do the trans , it feels funny now after all the flogging ...

Don't worry about being "busted on. " Your Ram runs as good e. t. 's as his did in a video I saw recently (16. 4 to 16. 8 sec). And, yours is "fueling impaired" with that "very trying pump" instead of the P=plenty pump. #ad

Still waiting for my injectors. Leaving for HVAC land in the morning, hopefully they will be here for our BOMBING run on the 22nd.

My boost elbow'd VA is keeping me rather happy, and at night the new 100/80 bulbs are helping to clear the way #ad

Very impressive. That 1. 6 MPH means about 25 HP. Not bad for something that also lowers the EGT.

My hat is off to you John.
Very impressive!
I owe you a case of beer!
I can't say anything about your reaction times, as the best I could do was a . 702 RT.
Getting 8300 lbs. to launch is a real challange with a Manual trans and highway gears.
I even tried deep staging.
My 16. 4 ET was accomplished with a slipping clutch that got progressively worse as the day went on.
The increases shown are about what I expected for flat ground, and a stock torque converter impaired.
The torque converter can't transmit the extra torque in the lower end of the race track.
A tighter torque converter would load the engine harder generating more heat in the combustion chambers, therefore spooling the turbo quicker, and transmitting the torque to the wheels in the lower end of the track.
Secondly the turbo cools down very fast with the 4" pipe while waiting for the lights to come down.
In a drag race situation leaving off Idle, this could hurt you.
You could power brake your truck using the boost gauge and leave with the same boost every time, you will have to find how much boost your tires could handle throug trial and error.
The more power you make the more you will gain with the exhaust.

Just wait untill you install the injectors!

Thank you again

guys , thanks for the encouraging words , i know that this thing will run faster , the 60 ft times were ok , but it did seem to fall flat and then pick up again , but on the top end it was pulling but not fast , this i feel is from the lack of more boost , once it maxed out it seemed to slow some , and to travel that last 320 ft in 3 plus secs no matter what configuration i was running proves that , once i get a boost elbow i may go back and do a few runs with VA and without . then after the 22nd i will have injectors installed and will go back to the track for one more flogging , hopefully the trans will hold up.

ted i know what you mean about building boost , on one of the runs that the wind goofed the timing it read a speed of 83 mph , that run felt REAL GOOD , even the run that i broke the tires off the line , got out and back in it , the truck pulled hard on that also , i know if i empty the junk out of the back seat , my 30 lbs of tools and ran on maybe half tank or less to get the weight down to say 6675 i think i could see a low 16 maybe sub 16 sec run , i may go back up wednesday nite and disconnect the VA and do a few more passes with just exhaust , from a post by another member i should be able to do a sub 18 second run . but if i keep this up i will be making a visit for a transmission BOMBing #ad
sooner than i expect...

ok i found a desktop dyno on corral.net , its a mustang site , is fairly accurate here is what it said for horsepower based on my times ... these are rough estimates at best

stock w/amsoil af 215hp best time poss 18. 36

stock w/ ams af and VA 258hp best time poss 17. 28

JRE 4" ,ams af 232hp best time poss 17. 89

JRE 4" ,ams af,VA 275 hp best time poss 16. 91

the last was the confusing one , it said i was making LESS HP than i used and gave a slower time , the weight i loaded may have been off by a few pounds , 5lbs at the most , the wind was blowing pretty good , maybe that tailwind helped more than i thought , but i did run a 16. 91 and got about the same thing , more HP used than available ... i need to find a dyno somewhere near me to see what i get for numbers...

I may just have to check out this raceway. Twenty five bucks is WAY cheap to get some real numbers to rub in my PSD buddy's face. Where is it located? Plenty of room or do you have to wait your turn with a bunch of other people? I've never been to a track before.

PS John, you get the map I sent?

The track is located on business (old) Rte. 101 in Lee NH.
I used to run my street bike there on Wed. nights (grudge night). That was at least 12 years ago and theprice was the same back then.

diesel dually , that route is now 27 , maybe they renamed it ?

arcticat i haven't seen it , but i haven't checked the fax , our secratary moved to another office and we have to fend for ourselves , plus i took friday off #ad
edit ... i looked , i didn't get it , email your address and i'll get a cybermap ...
coming from your house do you come down 89 ? if not get on 93 south , or (from the FAR north) come down 93 south to exit 7, rt 101 east , its about 15 -20 miles to the track from 93 , i think its exit7 or 8 , its the exit after the exit for rt 125 . the exit you want is called north rd (or street) when you get to the end of the ramp go left back over 101 and this street ends right in front of the gate to the strip , awesome view looking right down the 1/4 mile ... very easy to get to , i'll look for the map tomorrow , also i finally got my turbo monitor , but i may install it before i come up , i keep forgetting the truck is running #ad

Keep us informed this is interesting. I have a VA box and it seems to drop off after max boost about 20 lbs. Got a boost elbow yesterday and put it on last night no more drop off. I was getting max boost of 19-20 now I'm getting 28-30 lbs, not a lot but enough to make a difference. Between the VA box and the boost elbow I dropped over 2 seconds off of my 40-60 times. It should help you too. Thanks for the info.

I only live here and don't know the towns or the Rts. but I can get there!!!! LOL

don , i emailed you but i figure others would like to know the answer to that question , does that much boost trip the check engine light ? or do you have a boost fooler of some sort ?

dually , thats ok , it comes with age . #ad
but you are correct it is epping ... i am going to go back and run it again when i get the boost elbow to see if it gets me down into the lo 16 high 15 area ... i'm hoping that i can drop close to 14 without having to resort to bottles ... #ad
