I've used "not all who wander are lost" for years as a personal mantra for enjoying the world where ever I am. And now I hear that some dude claims to have written these words and is quoted in print, buttons, bumper stickers and t-shirts.

Do any of you all knowing ones know where Mr. JRR wrote these words (as in what book, page #, etc. ) ??

maybe I need to change to "the journey is the adventure" !

The quote is from Gandolf to Frodo after the Hobbit party. It concerns the Ranger, Arigone, and his drifting nature. BTW a great read. All that from 20 years ago. Man I need forget some stuff.

Yes that is correct it is Gandalf speaking of Aragorn. I have loved the Books since I was little and have reread them numerous times.

That is the first book series I ever read. Loved it and like Cowboy, reread them from time to time. Best movie made from a book that I have read. May not have all of it in there, but enough to keep the flow of it. Most movies that I watch after I read the book don't make sense. This is one of the few exceptions.

lizzyhermit,

I wouldn't change your sig. A good quote can be true for many people. Just put it in quotes like this "All who wonder are not lost". You could put Tolkien or Gandolf behind it to recognize the quoter.

The books are a great journey. I read them after the first movie came out. Couldn't put them down.

Tolkien opened my eyes to the wide world of fantasy many years ago while I was in school. At the time, I was only into reading ancient history and the like. Since that time, I've amassed over 250 science fiction books in my collection and every year it keeps growing from different authors I've found that bring images to the mind like that first reading of the hobbit did. I refused to see the first movie when it came out because I was afraid of how badly hollywood had butchered his work. I finally broke down and saw the movie, and was thoroughly impressed with it. No, it's not all there, but I knew that there was no way to fit all of the story into a movie, what they did include was enough to make the story work. The only thing I didn't like was the final movie and it's never ending endings.

Tell me about it. I liked the movies up until the 1 hr. ending in the last movie. I think I stood up 3 times before it was actually over... . #@$%!

I reread Lord of the Rings about once a year - since I was about 12. The movies were great (though Faramir was treated a bit differently than in the books). Lemme see if I remember the whole quote - it was from Gandalf's letter to Frodo about Aragorn, that he got in Bree:

All that is gold does not glitter,

not all that wander are lost,

The old that is strong does not wither,

deep roots are not reached by frost.

From the ashes a fire shall be woken,

a light from the shadows shall spring,

renewed shall be blade that was broken,

the crownless again shall be king.
