Hello all...

I`ve been a member for quite a while, my dad has a 99 ctd, and he wanted to get some info from this site, so I registered him...

Anyways. . I just bought a 96 2500 4x4 quad auto, 142k, in damn good condition. Originally from Arizona, theres one small spot of rust that I have to eventually take care of. . But, I`m having some other problems with it. I`ve done a few searches here and not come up with an actual answer, so Ive resorted to a post. The problems are:

1. Tail light fuse blows regularly, I wanted to check here to see if thats any kind of a known problem, I plan to troubleshoot the entire harness soon.

2. Dome lights stay on with doors closed. The buzzer goes off, so its not the drivers door, gonna have to see if I can get the passenger door pinswitch out. . might be a relay issue. .

3. Rear driveshaft support bearing is wayyy floppy and making a low rubbing/rumbling sound while in motion. How hard are these to change as I probably have to do it soon. .

4. ABS and Brake light stay on the dash while driving. I had an emergency brake issue with the clicker not engaging, but lubed it up with some lithium grease, and it works well now... The ABS light kinda bugs me tho. .

5. The headlight switch has two click-stops when rotated fully counterclockwise. Is this normal?

6. Got a diesel fuel smell from the drivers door side of the truck. . Are there any rubber hoses in this area to fail? hmm possibly loose filter. . dealer had that changed. .

Any other things to check while I have it up on jacks? The dealer put in a new valve body, and supposedly rebuilt #2,#3 gears. He also did a new fuel filter, air filter, oil, atf, and brakes. . I`m pretty sure I`m going to have to change the rear brakes as the ebrake doesnt work all that well...

welp, sorry for the long list, and I appreciate any help greatly. .

Try and find out if the killer dowel pin has been fixed.

The front end starting wearing out at 100k on my 96, ball joints, steering box etc... .....

Soundl like you got a good one

Two clicks on the headlight switch, one is to turn on the inside light the other turns on cargo light (above rear window) also.

On the drivers side fuel smell, check the return lines from the pump - they sometimes dry out and start leaking. Could be from an old spill, the perfume of diesel sticks around a long time.

On the ABS, check your connections under the hood and make sure they didn't leave something off or let it get dirty.

The abs/brake light might be a bad abs sensor in the rear end. I think they are around $40 from the dealer. The driveshaft bearing takes a couple of hours, I think. I've never done one myself so someone else will chime in and correct me if I'm wrong. Good luck with the new truck.

I almost forgot, a bunch of us from around the area get together to have a beer and talk truck stuff. You'll have to come. Will

thanx for the replys guys... .

Yea, the KDP is definetly on my mind. . I`m just wonderin how long of a job it actually will be... hmm. .

I isolated my major wiring problem inside the cab, the third brakelight wire (white+tan) is grounded somewhere in the cab, which was causing my fuse failures and ABS/Brake light problems.

hmm I`ll have to check out those return lines Mike. . thanks for the advise. . dunno if I can get my head up in there, possibly a situation for a mirror/flashlight... =/

Sounds good wmonroe, we`ll have to do that sometime. . Hopefully it won't be a weekend that I have to do OT. .

Thanks again

If you look in the local chapters and events section and then look for "Possible sw Pennsylvania show" you can see when were planning our next get together. It towards the end of the month.

E brake problem may be solved by adjusting the rear brakes as the self adjusters dont work all that well and the brakes may be way out of adjustment.
