When to replace shocks?

5'er behind a 4WD

Just picked up my trailer from the suspension shop after completion of an axle to under spring swap.

I was amazed at the towing difference. I had 5" rear clearance and 6 1/2" front prior to the swap. The most noticible problem prior to the swap was the uneven weight distribution towards the trailers rear axle.

The even trailer axle distribution and re-distributed tounge load makes for a much smoother ride. The increased bed clearance is also a comfort.

I just had my 5er fixed up too. I had about 6 inches at the rear of the bed, and 7 inches at the front of the camper over the bed. I had a welding shop do something different. On my camper, the spring hangars were welded to a 2x2 piece of steel, and that was welded to the frame. He basically welded a piece of 3x3 between the frame and the 2x2, and it works like a champ. Now there is just a slight "rake" to the camper. Not quite level, but lots better.

If I would have had the springs and axles flipped, that would have netted over 6" of total lift, and then the camper would be sitting lower in the front when loaded on the truck, plus be even more top-heavy than it is already.

This worked for me. It may or may not be an avenue for someone else.
