Results of fertilizer blasting

Folks,

Fertilizer blasting = Good. Oo.

We got the Ramcharger blasted yesterday; blasted using potassium nitrate (fertilizer - looks like red salt... ), and the results are fantastic. :D In the 'Other' forum I've posted pics of the blasting in progress, under ~78 Ramcharger project~, and well you can see for yourself. The link is just above in my first post.

I just wanted to show the results - the amount of time this saves in scraping and being upside down on the concrete is hard to put into words... . ;)

Hey Sam;

Got one question for you. What happens if a little is left somewhere in the truck? I work on fertilizer equipment, and rust is horrific on these machines. Fertilizer just eats the metal away in big chunks, bolts are forever rusted in. I admit I do not know which part of fertilizer is so corrosive, maybe the stuff they use for blasting does not have it in, like what is spread on fields here in the midwest.

hmm, well the whole truck is apart and there's not many places for the stuff to collect - I'm going to blow it all out today and get it wiped down, so I'm hoping there won't be any leftovers. It might have been a different type of fertilizer you are thinking about - I haven't heard of any corrosive properties of potassium nitrate, but I'm also definitely not a chemist ;) .

Plus I'm using POR-15 on the frame and probably everywhere else but the outer skin, and hopefully that'll cure any possibility of future rust.

I have to agree w/ MMiler. I built applicators for awhile and the life span of the vehicle's were greatly diminished by rust. It was insane.

My only recommendation would be to use a really good self-etching primer, such as the one found in Dupont's paint systems. I may be wrong here but I believe that they may offer a warranty against corrosion when applied to there specs.

I think a eqaully good alternative would be soda ash. With that you can still do the heavy stuff but also door panels as it will not produce the heat as sand/silica.

Plus I'm using POR-15

That's one of the few paints that will last in New England's salt road/high humidity/rusty environment.

Hence I'm a POR 15 fan.

just for fun

Sam,

How cool what you are doing. I have always wanted to do a complete re do of a car or truck. wish I had the space and shop like you do. Good luck on the re do and keep the pics coming, Makes me feel like I'm part of the crew. . Thats what I love about this site. The knowledge that this group has is out of this world. :cool: :D :)
