Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) just got a 97 3500 4x4 speedometer bounces

Just purchsed a 97 4x4 dodge 3500 ext cab.



It has a few problems, but the first one i would like to fix is the speedometer that does not work. I did search this forum, didn't find much on the subject. I will be ordering the manuel soon.



would like to know the best way to troubleshoot this problem.



the speedometer will come to life now and the and bounce around and the die out again. the connector on the tail of the xfercase is tight.



so now what? I have scopes and meters, whats the best way to proceed?

It's a gear driven sending unit. I'd say the sending unit is bad. It's easy to pull to see if the gear (plastic) has broken teeth. Be sure to scribe the assy before you pull it. If I remember right it rotates according to which gear is installed.

problem solved, took off the connector again and saw it was dirty. cleaned it and now it works. should have looked closer before posting.
