... and I love these Cooper Discoverer STT's! They're LT285/75R16's in a D load range, but they're stiffer than the E-rated garbage Firestone Steeltex that were on it when I bought it. They weren't cheap, but worth every penny for the improvement in feel, not to mention the traction. I took them out in the slop, and it feels almost like a dry road.

Damn, it's nice to buy something and feel like you got your money's worth!

I am running Cooper Discoverer STTs on a 3rd Gen (285/70/17s) on stock alloy 3rd Gen wheels. Like yourself, I feel that they are a great tire. For us 3rd Gen guys, they are price competitive with MTRs, BFGs, etc...

I 2nd your comment: "Damn, it's nice to buy something and feel like you got your money's worth!"

Wow, those are nice looking. And the max load is 3195 despite the "D" rating. I wonder how long they'll last...

rbattelle,

I have about 10k (rotated them at about 6500 miles, running 60psi in them) on mine so far (switched them out for summer driving to save wear) and probably 7k of that was towing 4k - 7k pounds. Fronts have a little rounding from turning, rears are a little flatter from towing. Overall, I would expect about 30-35k out of them if I am nice to them. About comparable to BFG TA KOs I have run. I do a lot of city type driving, so constantly turning/accelerating wears my tires more than most people who just go down the freeway.

I used to run the S/T on my 16" wheels and rotated them every 5000 I got 26000 out of the 1st set. I got 32000 out of the 2nd set when I took them off and put on 05 17" wheels finally got the stock tires wore out so Im going to the STT's this time. Oh and the 2nd set got put on another truck they are still running them think like another 10000 on tem now. The coopers are a good tire.

And dont worry about the D rating I had 25000 behind me and didnt have any problems.

I have these on mine and put 12000 miles on so far and still have 13/32". That with sled pulling on them too. Great tires, no complaints here. I love how they are quiet going down the road too.

How much and where are you getting the 285/17's at?

I got 'em from a local shop - anywhere that carries Coopers can get 'em...

I paid around $190 each. I bought 5 (1 for spare tire) and was out the door for under $1000...

Also - I am running the Innovative Balancing beads in them - 6 oz. per tire - works GREAT - no vibrations, no shimmy, life of the tire balance! I recommend them!

You mean tires that look like this?????...

Seriously,I got 55,000 miles out of the set of Discoverer S/T's I had which were rotated at each service. The S/T's which are on my Durango now have 42,000 on them and still should go until next spring easy. Keep the pressures up to manufacturer specs and rotate them religiously and will last. I do like the ride they provide and hopefully they will provide the same service I had gotten out of the last two sets of sneakers my truck has had... ... . Andy

BTW,

The wheels are Eagle Alloys Series 137's.

DG I tried the beads and didn't have very good results with them. I finally had the tires remounted and balanced after having the beads removed. With them in the truck would shake like they were'nt balanced even after adding more beads to the reccomended amount. But good luck with 'em.

Hmmm... Odd - what brand did you use?

I have heard the Equal brand is a lot more fussy about needing totally dry air when filling the tire. This is my 2nd set of treads (1st were BFG 315s) that I have used the beads in. The first set of tires had Counteract Balancing beads in them and I tried Innovative Balancing Beads in these STTs. It is IMPERATIVE that when the tires are mounted, they are dry mounted - no moisture on the rim or tire bead, and none of that black rim sealant goop. Otherwise the beads will "stick" to it and not do their job. I also use filtered valve stems to avoid any beads getting stuck in the stem when I am airing up or down the tires.

Sorry you had bad expereinces with them! Mine have been great for almost 40,000 miles now... Let me know if you have any questions I could help with...

I've also got the Innovative Balancing beads in my 325/60R18's and have very little vibration for this size tire. I just realized that these tires weigh 85 lbs apiece and I think I need another 2 oz per tire which I hope will smooth it out further. I'm pretty picky about this kind of stuff though, and I'm still happy with them.
