I found out my lift pump died the other week when I finally hooked up my FP gauge... it would start at 15 psi, then quickly make its way down to 2 psi, and then 0 when I got over 1800 rpm. Knowing there was something wrong, I ordered up a new stock pump (as much as I wanted to, I don't have the cash/time to set up a FASS system right now) and the Vulcan Big Line kit from Geno's.

I installed it this morning; with a semi-willing assistant :-laf, measuring about four times and cutting once, taking my time and one break, it took about five hours.

I didn't run into any problems, but I conveniently had a full tank  so instead of trying to blow the lines, I just used my roommate's finger to plug the stock line after I cut it. At most there was 1/2 a gallon of diesel on the floor, but that was from the entire project - filter housing, old lift pump, lines, etc... .

All I added to what was included was a handful of zip ties, a foot of 3/8" fuel line I had sitting around (used to cover the return and brake lines), a second hose clamp for the hard line/rubber interface, and a new fuel filter.

Initially, I wasn't sure how tight to make the line-to-swivel connections - they need to be pretty snug; I had a few drips before I got back in there with my wrench.

Over the holiday, I'm going to find something that works better to hold in the new line - it's much too big for the stock clips. Right now I have a zip tie about every three inches. I'm thinking something along the lines of the c-clamps with rubber insulation you can get from NAPA.

As my welding skills get better, I want to make up some sort of skid plate for the kit. The pump doesn't hang below the frame rail, so it might be overkill, but I'd feel a little better if it's more protected.

Everything seems like its running fine (possibly better, but the difference might just be in my head) and I have no codes, so hopefully there was no damage to the VP (I only drove about six miles since I found I had a dead LP). Driving around, the needle didn't move from 14 psi, and hammer-down I could only get it to 12.

Ask if you have any questions about the install... . I'd be happy to try and answer them.

There was something in the Carter box about a 12-month warranty on new pumps... . I'll reread it tomorrow; I'm sure somehow I don't qualify, but it would be pretty sweet to be set on pumps for life.

Some day I'm going to upgrade to a FASS/Airdog/whatever, but for now I think this'll work.

Maybe I have been lucky, but in three years I have never had a dead Carter OEM style lift pump. I did order the Vulcan kit and will install that just so a replacement is easy IF it is ever needed.

I always have about 15 at idle and 10# cruising with 1/4 throttle. . Of course, I haven't tried the HP race either... content to leave it pretty much stock. Other than RV275s this weekend and the BHAF + Van Aaken, it is as hopped up as it will ever get.

I need a good solid daily driver that isn't finicky.

Yeah. I read that, don't remember exactly what it said but it gives them all sorts of outs on replacing the pump.

I ordered mine from Auto Parts Fast at RockAuto, it was ~$180 and came with a new harness and washers. If you are doing the Big Line kit you do not need these. I did not know that. If I did, I probably would have ordered mine from somewhere like Hoesli, where you can get one without the harness for about $140. Most of the big rig shops I called quoted me about $150 for just the pump, so shop around.
