01 3500 QC 6spd HO 4wd blew out 5th and 6th yesterday while running empty down the hwy and out of state. Stopped in at the local dealer around Springfield, MO. He say's that my warranty is out since I'm at 77k and it's going to cost 6k to replace it. Not only that, but the transmission's are back ordered up to a month. I called the dealer that we have bought all four of our CTD's from over the past 3 years, and he say's the same. However, he said that if the truck was his, he would call DC and raise hell and that DC would more than likely replace the transmission leaving me only with the labor bill. Has anyone here had this problem? How hard is it to talk DC into doing something like this? I'm the type of person that thinks you get more ants with sugar than with vinegar, but I don't want DC to walk over me. Would love to have some inputs before Monday a. m.

Thanks in advance,

LK

At 77k you are way out of any warranty. We have problems just trying to get warranty work done when the truck are still under warranty, I wouldn't hold my breath if I were you.

But $6k dollars! Come on! You can buy these 6spds all day long from Enterprise Engine for $2500 brand new.

I'd call up Standard Transmission too just to see what a reman transmission would cost you.

Losing 5th and 6th at the same time sounds like a broken synchro hub, shift fork or a related linkage problem in the transmission. If that's the case, it certainly is not a $6,000 repair.

I would call Blumenthals and Standard Transmission. Odds are very good that they have seen this before. I would drive home in second before paying $6000 to have it replaced without pulling it to see what exactly is broken.

I believe Blumenthals is in OK but dont know where. I believe I would drain the oil and see if any metal came out and if not limp home and check with a local trans shop about pulling it and fixing it. Prolly not bad as Rusty mentioned and fixing would be way cheaper than replacing

For that kind of money, I would drive to Enteprise in Ohio in third gear, have them rebuilt it, throw a set of twins on for good measure, then go do hoopys around the dealers lot!:D

Lost 5th &6th gear

I lost 5th & 6th last summer. I was 120 miles from home pulling a 36' enclosed trailer. Drove home in 4th (with us gear overdrive in overdrive) at 55mph. Bought new trans from Blumenthal in Oklahoma City for 2250, and had it in two days. I just last month took old trans apart and found the front end of the output shaft had broken off. It stayed confined in the bore of the input shaft, but if you tried to use 5th or 6th would try to lock up. The repair parts (for rebuilding the old trans for selling) from Blumenthal cost $362. I had 70,000 miles,(2001. 5 with HO motor) and same old tune; motor has 100,000 miles warranty, drivetrain has 36,000 miles warranty. I have often wondered how often the trans breaks, since you don't see much about them here. Call Blumenthal, they aren't that far from Springfield area.
