Just Once.....

Just once, I would like to change my oil without Captain Hazelwood stopping by to lend a helping hand!!!!! Sheeesh. Every time, it is something new that causes me to spill some oil. ARRRGGGHHHH!

I am going to have to break down and use a funnel, after 15+ changes of Rotella with only a few drops spilled I switched to Delo. Let me tell you the Delo bottles SUCK for pouring into the valvecover. I have had Delo all over the place trying to get it in, and if it is windy (when is it not windy in WI?) forget it. Just be sure to have your simple green and garden hose handy for cleanup.

I always manage to spill a FEW drops. Now you have hit on the main reason that I installed a bypass filter- Got tired of cleaning up the mess all the time!

I always have cardboard down underneath. The only clean-up involved is the removal & disposal of the cardboard...

i tell you what, God mocks me every time I change the oil... I never spill a drop by myself. God makes sure we get 30-40 mph gusts as soon as the plug is pulled. That oil stream will nearly do a 90 degree turn about 2 inches below the pan and end up on the cardboard by the tire. It happens every time

The fun is in hearing about new guys with their first Cummins Ram, doing their first oil change. If the gorilla robot-installed factory oil filter doesn't get them, 11 quarts thundering out into a 5 or 6 quart pan will. Oo. Or even worse, one of those 12 quart WalMart plastic oil pans, with a drain hole designed to admit 1 quart per 30 seconds. Even funnier if they're wearing daddy's Rolex watch when they do it.....

I'm one of the liars - I never spill a drop, but I have been known to upset the whole pan a time or two. Once, when I was first starting out as a mechanic, I forgot to put the plug back in and was scratching my head after putting more than six quarts in a Pontiac without any showing on the stick. I looked down and saw that I was standing in a puddle of the stuff

Oil Change Stories

When I was in High School a classmate of mine named Steve got a job working in a gas station. The station did minor engine work and oil changes. Steve, who’s main job had been sweeping floors and pumping gas was told to change oil in a 283 Chevy. The owner of the station came out to the shop to see how the oil change was going and found 14 empty quart cans of oil next to the car and Steve was pouring another in the valve cover. The owner kinda whacks out and ask what the hel! was all the empty oil cans from. Steve says “I put 14 quarts in and it’s still not full. ”

I was doing great on my first oil change with Baby Huey, loosened the drain plug and managed to get that tight factory installed filter off without a drip. Pulled a sample about mid-way for analysis and thought. . okay, enough is enough. . let me remove the drain plug and speed up the process ( the oil was flowing very nicely into one of those Wally world plastic oil catch/transport type containers). It's was as if the heavens above opened up... a huge flow of oil gushed out as I watched like a deer in the headlights as the oil flow quickly over ran the puny oriface of the catch pan and poured onto my driveway. I was completely helpless for that moment. The stain remains as a testimonial to my courage and stupidity, LOL.

Exact same thing here,, was doing my first oil change on my truck,, I put a 12qt pan underneath the truck,, and lossened the drain plug, watched the oil trickle out,, un-srewed it a little more,,, then a little more,, Lookin' good,, just a wee bit mor... WHOOOSHHHH,, HOLY OIL SPILLS BATMAN,,

NOAH,, GET IN THE ARK, the Flood is a commin',,

I watched with an expression similar to Scotts as the oil quickly started overflowing the pan,, I couldn't figure what was up! then BAM!!, it hit me, OPEN THE VENT PORT YA NUT! So there I was, underneath my 2wd 3500 twisting, turning and jerking as fast as I could to open the little yellow vent port on the side of the oil catch pan,, Those things are sure hard to open when ya got oil runnin' all over 'em. I got about 8-9 qts in the catch can, and the rest I used on our driveway,, just to make the EPA Mad,, LOL.



I did manage to get about 11. 5 qts back in the motor. I used the other ~. 5 qt to make sure the outside of the motor was "Well Lubricated". (That's what happens when you decide to change your oil right when the sun is setting, and you spend 30 minutes using kitty litter to "hopefully" pick up some of the oil. )



I'm a klutz, and I'm glad I don't have to work on a D-Max or a POSD, I mean, a PSD.

I can honestly say that after installing Geno's Finger Touch drain valve, changing the oil is a very sanitary job. Spin the filter off keeping it upright and haven't dropped it... ... ... yet. I might lose a drop or 2 when pouring the old oil into the empty jugs but I do that in the back corner of the backyard near the mulch pile.

I figured a piece of cardboard would help when I changed the transmission/hydraulic fluid on my Case tractor. Not having anything big enough to hold 100 quarts, I grabbed a couple of those big round catch all plastic tubs. So, I remove the rather large drain plug and the pressure takes it out of my hand. Groping around in the tub which is rapidly filling, I find the plug and attempt to thread it back in before the tub overflows. Almost made it



My sawdust bin for horse bedding happened to be right next to the tractor so I throw a few shovelfuls on the oil before it soaks in too badly. Now, I am trying to pull this filled to the max sloshing bucket of oil out, spilling more in the process. Of course it is too heavy to pick up and dump into my funnel into a 50 gal drum. Using a smaller vessel to transfer the oil I slop yet some more (onto cardboard at least).
