For anyone interested, I had to submit to the new emissions opacity test. Averaged 14. 3% over the three runs. Allowed 40%. Soot is barely visible at 14%! NYS Bombers beware !!!!!!!

Any one know if Colorado has emissions testing or inspections? I am planning on moving there and wanted to know before I "lost" my cat converter during the move. I've been wanting to do a straight piped exhaust on my '95 but worried about getting fined for removing or gutting the cat if the "wrong" people found out through a state required emissions testing or inspection.

IMHO it is coming everywhere. Some states are trying to get old diesel farm tractors crushed, in Vermont they just stopped selling farm diesel fuel without a zillion conditions.

Bottom line, the Gov'mt is having to tighten the screw on emissions everywhere and it is only a matter of time before they get to us.

Why? Well that is a debate that would choke even this robust web site. Some say it is due to our missed commitment to cut greenhouse gases while others will say it is some kind of conspiracy, etc etc. Who really knows, but sooner or later the exhaust proctocolgists will arrive in your neighborhood. #ad

FF1063

I hope the cat won't affect the soot test any, I just gutted mine and put it back on last night. Darn soot nazi's!

Off the subject, are you an ex-squid? The FF1063 was the USS Reasoner fast frigate built by in the late 60's. I was a Hull tech on the USS Lockwood ( FF1064) in the early 80's

Just curious,

Steve.

Colorado has emissions testing along the Front Range only, which includes about 6 counties, including Denver. As I remember the test, you are not allowed to exceed 40% opacity for more than 5 seconds. The truck is put on a dyno and an employee "drives" it.

I haven't yet tested my Ram, but will be doing so in the next week. I wouldn't be too worried though, the 6. 2 that used to be in my Blazer would smoke with the best of them, and the most I managed was 8% (maybe oil smoke isn't as dense?). If you should fail, change the air filter and oil, and put a throttle stop of some sort on the linkage so full throttle is not attainable. I did this on the 6. 2 just incase. I've never heard of anyone getting fined here for missing equiptment, they just make you fix/replace it before you can pass the test and register your vehicle.

1tuffram,
If you are moving to front range metro area then you'd better have something that at least looks like a cat under the truck. They do a visual inspection and a real dyno test.

I've had two inspections total (one a year)in stock trim. Just added a TST 230/605 plate and will try to get that thru next year. It doesn't smoke much so as long as I don't get snagged by the visual I think it will be ok. Bought paint from cummins to take care of that.

Heetseeker_1 / Steve,
Your right on target with the ship. Was onboard 85-87, always underway. Left the Navy after that one. My detailer got even with me for turning down a Spruance class DD when I was in Subic Bay !!!! I was an ET.

Good Luck, Ron

Just a thought, but maybe you could replace the kitty with a resonator from a 24 valve equipped truck. It is the same length and pipe configuration (3" in/4" out) and looks like a kitty, but is straight through. #ad

I finally got the truck e-tested on Friday. It passed fine, I don't recall the numbers but they were nowhere near the max. My truck is stock for now, but the bombing will soon commence now that I have my license plates. However, if you need a test, I would recommend getting an appointment. The regular inspection places do gas only (as far as I know). When I called the diesel shop I used to use for my Blazer, they were booked solid for about a week. I didn't try any other places, since the place I went used to only charge $35 instead of the state allowed max of $45, but I found out they now charge $45 (annually, ouch!). (If anyone knows of a cheaper place to have this done in the Denver metro area, please let me know. )

Hey 1 tuffram,
Just got my Colorado emissions testing done yesterday. I have a stock '95 with an automatic. Passed with flying colors.
At 40 mph, 1%
At 50 mph, 1%
At 60 mph, 9%
I watched the procedure. I believe the techinician accelerates hard from each of the posted speeds to see how much comes out the exhaust. The 9% at 60 mph was when he tapped the brake to unlock the torque convertor. One small puff was all I saw.
The printout gave rear wheel horsepower and torque figures as well.
I believe there is only one place in the entire county (El Paso) to get this done.
