Excuse this post guys. I know this subject has been covered before, but all the posts concerning the issue have been taken off evidently. I couldn't find what I needed. #ad
Here goes.

I have heard a lot of contreversy over these filters. I am a drag racer and have used these filters for years with great results. When I went to get one for my truck, I had people call me everyname in the book. They say that the K&N allows dust particles through that scars the cyninder walls and greatly reduces engine life. They don't dispute the power gains though. Can someone with experience shoot me straight on this issue?

I haven't seen dust get by a properly installed K&N on my rigs. K&N has been around for a long time, I highly doubt they could of lasted as long as they have selling a product that damages engines.

Here is my 2 cents worth. I tried K&N twice, first time with the stock replacement and recently with the re:880. Both times silicon levels in my oil analysis shot way up. Maybe I travel a lot more dirt roads then most, but not going to chance it.
P. S. Used K&Ns for sale...

showeth:

I agree with "illflem. " I have been
using them in my truck since new.
I have 110,000 miles on it with no
problems yet. They are used by some
of the top desert race teams in the
Baja 1000. My son races two (2)
Yamaha Banshee four wheelers on
the A. M. A. and Mid-Atantic race
circuit. The motors have full
Duncan Racing "National" Ported
engines in them and we use "K&N"
filters in them also. These machines
are sometimes raced in "terribly
dusty conditions!"

The use of these filters is
controversial. As I have said
before, these filters are like
alot of other items on these
trucks, "personal preference. "
I will agree with the opponents
that the K&N filter "needs to be
properly cleaned and oiled" and
that is where I believe ALOT of
the problems come from.

Hope this helps you.

I truely believe that all the bad press on K&Ns are from the stock filter not sealing in the housing right. I had a stock K&N since 12K and now have the RE-0880 filter in the Psycotty housing my last two oil analysis have had 2 at 82K and 3 at 90K. I have had my intake off too many times to count and it has always been clean.

I agree with John_P the filter need to be properly cleaned and oiled and also sealed well.

The oiled K&N traps dirt. The turbo sucks hard to achieve 30+ psi boost and pulls this oily dirt into the system.

I dyno tested a Ram at 390 hp to the wheels on the Dynojet 248C. This machine also records spoolup rate in that the buildup of hp from 1250 rpm is affected by how quickly the turbo spools up. The hp curves were superimposable for a stock somewhat dirty filter, a nfew Fleetguard, and no filter with the airbox top propped open.

Therefore, I can say that I have observed the oily dirt issue, and also dispute the hp increase with the turbocharged Cummins.
I run a Fleetguard or Mopar paper filter, stock airbox, collar to fender removed.

As Will Sonnett said, "no brag, just fact. "

Joe, you may be correct about no power gains, but how do you explain the fact that with a Mopar filter I can drive 100 miles and the filter minder is halfway up,with a K&N I can drive 10,000 and the minder doesn't move?I'm not alone in this observation.

I don't know which way to go. After some experments I pulled the boot off between the air box and the fender and the minder pulled down less then with the boot on. Next I removed the air filter and the minder was at the top it had not moved. The point made is that the air box and the filter isn't large enough for my 230HP. I've compared KN to others like AEI and so far I am not getting fact & figures to support making a change from the paper filter.

Here is some testing I did in sept this year. The set up I was running at the time was a TST #11 plate all the way forward, stock turbo (12CM2), stock injectors, & Open exhaust.

EGT test using different air filters and configurations hauling cattle up a 5 ½ % grade 5. 6 miles long, two cows at a time. Tried to visually load cows so that the weight was the same. Outside temp (o/s) taken off in cab gauge. Cruise set at 65 MPH in 5th. EGT reading at the top of grade.

W/ stock housing and new paper filter (Fram) o/s 74 Deg EGT 1200+
with about one mile left had to kick the cruise off, down shift to 4th, and slow to 60 MPH to keep the EGT under 1200.

W/ stock housing and K&N filter o/s 78 Deg EGT 1100

W/ Open RE-0880 K&N filter o/s 80 Deg EGT 1050

W/ Psycotty housing w/ insulation tape and RE-0880 filter o/s 84 Deg EGT 900 - 925

There is also a big seat of the pants difference between the paper filter and a K&N in the Psychotty housing. The engine just feels freer to run with the bigger filter and the Psychotty housing.

The K&N filter does not pass the Cummins Filtration standards. I have one on my truck. The Fleetguard filter also does not meet Cummins standards. I shall still have the K&N on my truck.

Here's my 2 cents worth. I raced dirt bikes for years & the only filter to use is the oiled open cell foam filter. This will filter ALL #ad
dirt. Hence, K&N's answer to its fine dirt particle filtration problem, the oiled FOAM pre-filter. If your running on the street ONLY a K&N gauze only s/b just fine. If your worried or do the 4X4 offroad thing get a foam pre-filter that goes over the gauze unit & u will have the best of both worlds. I run the w/ the pre-filter that is PROPERLY oiled w/ a 4" exhaust pipe insert to get a correct seal. I'm very satisfied w/ this setup.

What is the K&N part number for the prefilter that goes with our truck's filter?

I believe the pre-filter part# is 25-0880. I highly recommend Diesel Injection Service's #ad
competitive pricing & excellent fast service.
