I was given a K&N filter and am not sure if I should use it or not. I did a search and was not very succesful. I have seen people say they use them and some say they wouldn't dare put one in their truck. I just put in a fleetguard, but can't hurt to have one an extra around the house. Is it true that it lets more dust in? Does it really help with HP and lower EGTS?

Thanks

Russ

Hp. NO, or maybe a slight amount.

EGT's. Yes.

Dust through. I experienced problems and so do others, dodge removed them from their shelves, do not recommend them for use in a turbo charged diesel. Others use the K&N and report no problems with dirt pass through, Use what makes you feel comfortable.

I have used one

for 87k miles with no dust or oil sucked through and stuck on the intake hose or turbo fins. I have grossly over oiled it to the point of the oil running out of the box bottom and still never sucked oil through it. That being said I was not near the performace level of some I just switch this past week to an afe mega cannon and it flows air like crazy and it is louder than a K&N in the stock box but I can deal with it. If you don't feal comfortable with using it don't If you do try it keep an eye on the intake hose and turbo fins for build up of crap.

Way back when, I got a 17hp increase by adding a 4" cat back and the K&N replacement filter which was prototyped on my truck back in 94. Just be careful on the install of the filter follow the instructions and use a good silicone grease on the sealing flange.

Or just step up to the better AFE air system and don't worry about any thing... ... ... . enjoy the cummins hummin

My oil analysis' always come back clean, my last silicon (dirt) was 4 PPM, well below the limit, this with the K&N in the factory box. Wonder what the silicon PPM would be for someone using an OEM filter?

I'm sure Cummins and Dodge would say that an aftermarket filter isn't recommended because it's installation and maintenance can be variable and cause problems. As long as a guy follows K&N's instructions he will have no problem. I have over 300k on them with no oil analysis silicon over 7ppm.

Shoot there's lots of things that DC and Cummins say we shouldn't do but we do anyways.

Yeah, what Cummins says will make a difference to some people and none at all to others. IMHO, it's just a good idea to be aware of the manufacturer's input before making your own decision.

Ran the K&N in the stock box:

straight from the factory, pre-oiled - noticed oil build up in the intake hose and on the turbo fins bad :(

Ran the AFE Megacannon:

straight from the factory, pre-oiled - worked great until I hit a huge mud hole and splashed water in the engine compartment which forced the oil through the filter and into the turbo... If you don't get crazy with it offroad it is a great set up. :)

Now running the Scotty Air II:

Love it! Love it! Love it! The enclosed box keeps the water out when I offroad and the 4" hole in the cowl keeps the EGTs down. Did I mention that I Love it! :D

Intake questions New Guy

I've been reading a lot, but since I'm a 'Rookie' diesel owner, I will have many dumb questions for a while. On particularly the AFE intake set-up, I keep reading about a 4" hole in the 'Cowl', (and haven't seen it in any pictures), what and where is this hole? Is it in the bracket underneath the mega cannon filter?. . And did I read somewhere that somehow you can run an intake 'hose' from the round hole in the 'fog light' hole in front bumper to add more cool air? If so, is there a kit for this or pictures etc?. . Again any and all help is greatly apreciated. . Thanks. . John G

The AFE does not need the 4" hole, the scotty does. The 4" hole is cut into the plenum that the hvac system draws from so you will have a considerable addition of noise in the cab. With the AFE you will hear the turbo but most of us like to hear the turbo sing. So far no one has shown any significant gains from drawing air from the bumper area, where water becomes a significant risk. Hope this helps.

No such thing as a dumb question... . well actually there is  but this is NOT one so don't worry about it.

The AFE Megacannon does NOT use the hole in the wiper cowl. The set up you are referring to is the Scotty Air II. I am running this set up and love it. If you want pics go to www.wildcatdiesel.com

I have ran the Megacanon as well as the Scotty II and I can tell you that there is no more noise with the Scotty than with the the MC.

BTW, not trying to nit-pick but the Scotty doesn't "need" the hole in the cowl either. It is an option so you can either run it quiet (when the wife's with you) or loud. :D

Found the hole

Ah Hah!. . Thanks guys. . I finally found a pic with a Mega-cannon set-up AND a hole right behind it thru the upper firewall and into the area below the wiper cowl. . Mystery solved. .

I think I'll go for the Mega-Cannon and try it without the hole for a while. Who / where is the best price on one of these?. . Oo.

Just as a side note, I gotta tell ya, I just paid $1. 79 a gal for my diesel and at the same station they're selling unleaded for $1. 98!!

and my old '84 Chev 3/4 ton got 11 mpg !! I can't understand why EVERYONE doesn't drive these (Cummins) diesels! My new (to me) '95 2500 got over 20 mpg all the home from Texas to Calif. stock. . w/ 177,000 miles on it. . Holy Cow. That's better than my other truck, Little Chev S-10 w/ little 2. 8L V6, that gets 17-19 mpg !!! and it can't get out of it's own way. .

AND it's so easy to trick these things out. I'm a convert.

Looking forward to more good advice from you guys. Thanks. .
