I know there are quite a few of you out there running K&N filters. For those that are, is it just the filter itself that you're using inside the stock plastic housing or is there a K&N housing available as well. Is there an advantage to using a non-stock housing? If you are using the stock housing, does the filter minder gauge still work with the K&N filter? Just trying to help my baby breathe a little easier. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks guys.

I just use the K&N for the stock box. I sure delivers alot more air. Turbo sings like a bird. I took it out the other day to clean it and put the stock filter back in and it felt like my truck was starving for air. Turbo was much more quiet.

K&N does make improved housings for their filters, but not for our Rams as far as I know. There is the Phscotty air unit available that takes a cone type K&N, it's a great product. The stock airbox K&N works just fine for most folks, your filter minder will still work, but won't move again until the filter is very dirty. Follow the K&N install instructions to a T for no leaks. Don't overservice the filter, wait for the filter minder to move or wait 100k before you even open the air box again. Do all of this and it will perform flawlessly for you.

The K&N Filters are a controversial subject
on this website. Some members like them
while others do not.

I have had K&N filters in my 96' Dodge
since it was new. First with the stock
airbox and now in the "Psychotty Air
Filter. " I have never had ANY problems
with them and feel they do a good job.
I still believe alot of the problems
come from improper oiling of the element
after they are cleaned.

My son races Yamaha Banshees on the AMA
and Mid-Atlantic Quad Cycle Circuits.
His engines are built by "Duncan Racing"
in Santee, Calif. One of the engines has
the powerful "403 Eliminator" Kit in it.
We have used K&N filters in our engines
for five years with very good results!
And... . we race in TERRIBLY dusty
conditions!! The inside of the intake/carb
assembly is always very clean even when the filter is covered with dirt and dust!

My "filter minder" only worked on the
stock airbox when the K&N was EXTREMELY
dirty!

Also, I would highly recommend the
"Psychotty Air Filter" to you. It
lowered my EGT's by 150 degrees.

Thanks for the replies. I was reading on K&N's site and they say that up to 1/4 of an inch of debris on the filter is acceptable... even beneficial. That the existing debris helps to capture additional gunk. They also say that very little respiration is hindered by the layer of debris. Amazing.

Ditto on the K&N's. The cone style filter for the Ram is RE-0880 and you can get a foam prefilter sleeve if you drive offroad alot, that P/N is 25-0880. If all you do is highway driving and are not in very dusty areas all the time, the foam sleeve is really not nessecary.
You will need a short piece of 4" exhaust pipe or PVC pipe (Home Depot)to attatch the filter to the air inlet hose. If you buy the Psychotty kit (Which is highly reccomended) you will get the adaptor to attatch it with the kit. It sounds great and you will have a noticable increase in power and aceleration

I dont know the cheapest place to get the Psychotty kit, another TDR member may know. But the chepest place i have found for the K&N is www.summitracing.com
