What is all the hoopla about the k & n filters maybe not being restrictive enough or letting to much debris in the engine, any info or expieriances?

Hey Dale,

I had a K&N, no problems. I now have an Amsoil. It's supposed to filter a little better due to the oiled foam construction. The Amsoil is a little eaiser, in my oppinion, since you don't have to grease the edges for a good seal like with the K&N. If you do go with either one, be sure to blot the excess oil off before installation. Good luck.

This will no doubt be a long topic. K&N filters have been discussed to death here. They've been blamed for anything from a 10 HP gain, nests for rodents, plugging the intercooler with oil, too restrictive, sucking in dirt around the seals, making too much noise, you name it. I've had one on my truck for 4 years, and over 100,000 miles. I've taken it out 4 times & cleaned & oiled it, and have had no problems with it. I'm very careful about making sure it seals in the box properly, there have been problems with the seal. When it's time to clean & recharge it, you should oil it uniformly, but not excessively. You might want to check the piping into & out of the intercooler once in a while too. Mine is clean & dry, others have found traces of oil they feel comes from the K&N. I like an oiled filter for the dusty conditions I live with most of the time, but not everybody has that to deal with. All I can suggest is to try it, you'll either love it or hate it.

If your concerned with the sealing around the edges of the stock box, go with the RE-0880. It has a nice tight seal that will not allow dirt to pass through. As far as the filter letting dirt through, this is the second truck my K&N has been on. Neither ever had a bad sample. The RE-0880 is also cheaper that the replacement for the air box.

I'm with Dennis 100%,only thing I might add is if you never get into dust you can stretch the service interval up to 50k miles. The Amsoil filters are good ,cheaper too.
I haven't heard of a prefilter for the stock airbox,if you're going to get into a lot of dust go for the 0880.

Dale:

I agree with everything Dennis and
illflem already said.

I have also had the K&N filters in
my truck almost since day one with
NO PROBLEMS at all!

My son races four wheel ATV's on the
AMA National Circuit and in the
Mid-Atlantic Series. We are running
two Yamaha Banshees HIGHLY modified
by Duncan Racing in Santee, California.
We experience EXTREMELY dusty conditions
at many of the tracks and have never
had a problem with the K&N filters on
those machines either. Those filters
are also used on alot of the Class 1
trucks in the Baja 1000.

I have said it before and I will say it
again, I believe one of the biggest
problems with the K&N is people don't
clean and then re-oil them properly!
If that is not done they will give you
problems.

Hope this has helped you. As Dennis
said, "the K&N filters have been
discussed to death here. " I agree!!!

I have an Amsoil air filter and it works great. It holds tons of dirt and if you use the Amsoil filter tack oil it loses none of it into your intake system.

There is a video from Amsoil that shows some interesting flow testing on both types of filters. You should check it out before you buy.

For the record I notice no significant performance increase over the stock paper filter which filters very well. My truck is a stock 215hp. I don't think this is because the Amsoil filter is restrictive it is because the paper isn't that bad.

All of the dirt bike racers I know use foam not gauze. Some of them are very fast and would spare no expense (money or wear) for any fraction of horsepower.
