Ok, this is just plain and simple BS. Had a filter get to where it wasnt filtering the finer things in life around here. Wrote to K&N, they shipped me (actually Mom's pickup) a new one, and it is worse than the one we took off. We had the grease on the rubber seals, everything was tight, so dust wasnt getting around the filter, it was getting through.

As much as I hate to bash anyone, this has got to get out to some of the guys considering an aftermarket filter, who may not be as in the know as we are. I dont have any oil analysis results, or I'd post them, too, but I'd bet the Si would be in tha alarm range.

THis air intake hose has about 8K on a thorough cleaning of the intake tube. The filter was about 10K mi old, and has never been serviced.

That was why I quit using the K&N. Didn't like the crud I was seeing on the turbo blades. Thought I was over oiling so I cut back and that helped a little but not enough. Put an AFE in last fall when up at Piers and will see how it is doing pretty soon. Don't have enough miles on the new filter yet to tell.

As much I like my K&N's and the excellent service they have given me over the years, I fully expect to switch to a BHAF soon...

I don't think you can go wrong there!

I don't know the flow difference, but I do have the CFM's of the BHAF.

This is for the Donaldson B105006

4"H20 = 450 CFM

6" = 590

8" = 680

No. They are way to big for the stock air box. That's why they are called BIG HONKIN AIR FILTERS.

Well, I have to put in my $. 02 here.

I've been running a K&N in my stock airbox for 2 years and haven't seen any evidence of crud in my turbo or air plumbing.

Maybe I got a good one.

I think the super fine dust around here from all the agriculture contributes to the problem. If you live in a snadier area, or dont have as much fine dust, you may be ok. IMO, it's still a rip off, though. I took the K&N out of my pickup and put it in Mom's- it doesnt filter like it should, but it IS a darn sight better than the one that Mom had. JLEONARD, the "Baby BHAF" you sent is working out just fine. It was about 3" too long for the airbox, so I just have it stuffed in there as far as it will go. Guess next oil change, we'll find out how well it filters.

CGauthier- you can take the stock airbox completely out- the BHAF has a lip on it that the filter hose bolts up to directly. Nike no longer makes the Old Smoky mounts; think CB got the last one.

SO thats how it is eh CB :mad: ;)

Thanks for the info DP, so i suppose you clip it on and you gotta come up with some kind of contraption to hold it in place to keep it from just dangling? I'm a firm believer in doing things right the first time and im a little worried about making myself look like a hack by what im doing underneath the hood of an engine that is king of all kings ;)

I would hate to have that dust blasting my turbo and the insides of an intercooler. Probably doesn't do the rings or cylinder walls any good either.

Yep, Mike quit making them... I got the last one... along with one of his fuel pins and a VERY NICE custom built 35/40 hybrid turbo!

I got off like a bandit on that deal! :D

CG, you can just bolt it on to the intake and it will sit nicely on the fender well, look in my readers rigs got a few pics, heres one. . Bill https://www.turbodieselregister.com/user_gallery/displayimage.php?&photoid=10353&width=0

I have a K&N filter on my polaris 500. I am a Land Surveyor, so I really punish it.

I have been happy so far with the K&N.

Here is my little trick: Place a little grease (Marine grade is best) on the ENGINE side of the filter. Now, you can monitor what is getting through/past the filter.

Anyway, what kind of filter do you recomend?

Maybe K&N has some bad filters out...

Mine look good.

Try the grease trick, on some of your engines, (you don't need much grease to do this. . )

I think this may be the only objective way to "look" at what is actually getting past the filter.

Thanks for bringing this up. I am on the suspicious now... maybe there are bad K&N's out there. .
