I have had a problem with the k & n air filter not geting all the fine dust on my old truck. I always put a ton of oil on it but it always had a coat of fine dust in the intake. I cleaned it off and had another coat within 3000 miles. I read a post on the first gen. forum and someone mentioned this so i want to get this resolved before i fork out another $90. 00 bucks only to wear out my cylinders, pistons, and rings on my precious CTD.

Could it be the gasket around the edge might not be sealing with the airbox properly? Mine shows no dust ingression at all after some 20K (using ye olde white glove test), and that was straight from the cardboard box from whence the filter was purchased. The outer side of the filter media is showing some grime, but nothing on the downwind side of the filter. Downwind side of the airbox is as clean as a new whistle.

MY K&N has about 130k on it, I installed it in the fall of 96, right after I bought the truck. I've cleaned & oiled it three times, no sign of dust, oil in the intake or other problems, & I read all the posts here almost daily. I live on a gravel road & it's VERY dusty within a day of rain. I am careful about the seal, & grease it each time I take it out.

I just had an oil analysis done after ading the K&N RE-0880 cone style filter. The total reading of silicon was 3. That is very low and the filteris working great.

I think the K&N filter for the stock box is leaking around the sealing edge. My original filter did just that. Hence, the change to the cone style. No problems now.

The key here seems to be that most K&N critics think only the K&N is likely to leak, when in FACT, ANY type/brand of filter will do the same if the airbox is poorly designed and proper attention to filter installation is not applied. If an airbox IS going to prove to be leaky - with ANY filter - are you going to feel any better just because YOUR leakage was on a $20 filter instead of a $60 one?

I have over 111,000 miles on my K&N - oil analysis is OUTSTANDING on silicon (DIRT!) content, and the inside of my intake tract and turbo are white-glove CLEAN!;) :D :p

Before K&N critics condemn the FILTER for dirt bypass problems, maybe they should pay closer attention to the design and construction of their airbox, and closer attention to their installation methods!

CAnderson;

I think you may have described the problem in your own words

... I always put a ton of oil on it but it always had a coat of fine dust in the intake. ...

All oiled type filters recommend a light oiling to prevent the excess from coating your intake system. The oil coating attracts micron particles no filter media will stop.

As others state over and over again. NO filter will stop dirt if it doesn't fit the box or seal tight on the clean side.

My old truck was a first gen so sealing was not the problem, as those type of filters sealed very well. As for the somewhat heavy oiling, there was never any oil on the rest of the intake. Mabey I am being paranoid but there was definetly an increase of dust after swap. I could also look thruogh the cotton filter material in the light, it seamed very thin.
