K&N makes an oil filter for the 2nd and 3rd Gen. Cummins motors. Does anyone on this forum have experience with K&N oil filters??? I am thinking of using them on my '05 Ram.

I used them on my '97 & '01 Diesel Fords with no problems at all, but have no experience with them on the Cummins.

Hi Hermans. . . we'll I'll try to be brief about this, but the short answer is NO. And not just NO, but NO WAY

Frams are bad news. I have been on here since 1999 and have read about 5-6 engine failures at least caused by Fram filters.

Use Fleetguard and be done with it.

Vaughn

I don't know whether Fram makes them or not but your best bet will probably be an AFE ProGaurd 7 filter. This is the same type but has more layers and filters better than K&N.

Sorry, I thought he said air filter, guess it's time to clean the monitor screen.

I've seen the cummins motor suck down a brand new fram filter. Crushed it like a can. Don't let them catch you with a fram, will void your warrenty.

THere was a rather indepth study done on oil filters in the TDR about 2 years ago that went into the different materials and how much surface area each of them had. Fleetguard had one of the best and the pricing is good as well. The stratopore if I remember right call Genos they have a great price on them.

How the heck can a filter pressurized to 60 psi (or more) be crushed by 14. 7 psi?

-Ryan

Thanks for some of the posts, but I am asking about K&N OIL FILTERS, not air filters of even Fram filters. K&N does make oil filters for the Cummins Motors.

Cummins/Dodge has a list of specific oil filters that meet Cummins standards for oil filtration. Use of any non approved filter can result in engine damage that will not be covered under warranty.

I'm not sure if K&N is on the approved list or not, but your best bet is to either use a Fleetguard (subsidiary of Cummins) or Mopar filters (Fleetguard in disguise).

Rosco,

Thanks for that, You've just told me what by buddy with an '04 Cummins said " Get the Fleetguard " and that is exactly what I'm going to do. Thanks again for your help.

Oh, BTW nice truck, I like your color choice.

K&N Oil Filters are good. Do not worry, run it until you change your oil and by a Fleetgaurd if it will make you sleep better at night. I have never herd of a K&N oil filter failure.

Yes I know they are a little more than the Fleetguard's, I have used K&N's on my Ford's since '97 and never had a problem. I just wanted to know if anyone has had problems or any experience with them on the Cummins, but it seems like no one on this forum uses them. Thanks again.

Herman

I am currently running a K&N Oil filter... I can get them at a local auto parts store for $10. Everything is running at 100%. It is easily as good as the mopar filters that come from the factory.

Heavyweight,

Thanks for that, good to see someone using them on a Cummins. I'll be running one soon.

Thanks again,

Herman

Why create potential problems where none exist? It just puts a potential "out" in DC's hands in case of a lubricant-related problem.

Run the TSB-approved filters and be done with it, especially when the Fleetguard Stratapores are readily available at a reasonable price.

Just a few posts before you said this:

I would listen to your buddy. It seems to me that on this Forum and a couple other CTD forums that I frequent K&N is kind of a bad name when it comes to the cummins and dodge group. I certainly wouldn't chance it myself running anything other than the Stratapore. Their relatively inexpensive and easy to get. Although I don't have any data on the K&N oil filters, it has been proven (including on this site) that K&N AIR filters are vastly inferior in their filtering ability. Why chance it with their oil filters
