Hi Members, I removed the airbox (with/K&N) and installed a K&N (RE-0880) and while I was at it removed the turbo silencer ring. I really like this setup. My truck seems to run better than before and I love hearing that turbo spinnin up. Turbos like air and this setup really is the way to go.
K&N to fit stock airbox cost me $72. 00. The bigger and better K&N RE-0880 cost $52. 00. The RE-0880 will fit inside the airtube from the turbo but it is alittle short for the end of the filter to fit into the corner of the engine compartment and stay there so I put a small piece of thin wall pvc pipe between the filter and airtube.
There is a prefilter that fits over the K&N RE-0880 it's part # is 25-0880. I ordered it also but it was backordered. I (think) it is red foam and only restricts flow to the main filter by 2% and it's cost is $21. 00.
Has anyone with this setup had any problems with water or maybe blowing snow? Does this void warrenty? If I have to take my truck to dealer should I put my airbox on?

Rammin: If your engine suffers any top end distress (ie. worn rings, valve seats, valve guides, etc) Dodge MAY chose not to honor your warranty. However, they would have to prove that the K&N installation is substandard and I think enough of these things are out there now that that would be very hard to do.
The only other concern I have about the system is in regards to the comments about long term usage coating the compressor blades and intercooler with oil. But I quess that would take MANY miles and could be easily fixed by removing the compressor housing and swabbing the blades with solvent and the intercooler could also be removed and sloshed out with clean sovlvent. In fact, that may not be a bad idea to do every 50,000 miles or so anyway.
I too like the sound of the turbo whine and am seriously considering the K&N setup. BTW where is a good place to buy the filter?
Ron.

Just put a new K&N filter in the airbox and couldn't believe the difference. I can really hear the engine spool up and it has a much better throttle response. I had ordered the filter before I saw the new Ideas for the new style filter. Thinking about taking the airbox off and just putting on a different filter but hopefully Scott perfects his Airbox and I can buy that. Keep working on it Scott.

Looks like RamminRick read the "Air System" thread recently (back on page 3 or 4 now) and got set up with the Scott Air system. I plan to do the same! I love the way this forum causes us to BOMB along with everyone else. KISSers are left behind.

Like Scott1 mentioned, some snow and a bit of water shouldn't hurt anything and his hasn't gotten too wet. The oil layer on the filter should provide a natural water-repellent surface. If the filter ever got good & wet though, washing & reoiling probably isn't a bad idea since filtering performance could be compromised. Sounds like a good question to pose to K&N.

Just installed my scotty air system. When accelerating, the intake air sounds like it is going to collapse the hood! It brings out the little boy in me! Seriously though, it looks like a quality setup that will get more air into the cummins while still providing the filtration that is required. I used an ABS coupling from a hardware store that was a slip fit inside the neck of the K&N to allow the clamp on the inlet hose to have something to bear down on as it was tightened. As far as a prefilter for the RE-0880, I raided the wife's panty hose drawer, slipped one leg over the K&N. Then I put the hose clamp that came with the filter over the panty hose leg, tightened it slightly, and cut off the stocking leg. The result looks very clean and should prevent debris from getting into the deep folded pleats of the K&N. Some of you may poke fun at using panty hose on a "manly" truck, but the price was right. (Until my wife finds out!)

Riflesmith , The pantyhose was a good idea. I bought the Pre-filter "sock" for the RE-0880 is about 40 bucks(P# 22-8035pk) It a satin/Silk type of material. Black with the K&N logo. Conical shaped to fit the RE-0880 perfectly. Elastic end seals well against the Filter/Airbox hose connection.

If I had to do it over again I would try the pantyhose. #ad

Scott is developing a cold air induction system for the RE-0880 filter attached to the Turbo intake host. It`s sounding like it going to work well #ad

The K&N part # 22-8035PK (sock) is for extreme dusty dirty conditions. It's use restricts airflow by 10% to the filter. I have been told these are used on military helicopters in sandy (dessert) enviroments.
The K&N part # 25-0880 is a red foam and only restricts flow by 2%. It costs around $21. 00. It is just to keep the the bigger chunks out of the filter ribs.

Since alot of people are talking about what the Scotty/K&N will do if exposed to moisture I'll tell you about experiences from another field. I've raced jetskis on regional and national level for 5 years. One of the big first mods alot of rec riders do is low restriction flame arrestors. The ones that chose K&N have found that the gauze will literaly soak up any water that it is presented with and will clog with water to the point it won't flow enough air to sustain operation before it passes enough water to cause engine damage. This has made this filter almost unusable in certain applications that present alot of water. Most guys simply use a flame arrestor without a filter since dust in our situation is non-exsitent. The water tht is passed rarely is enough to cause a hydrolock. But most of those who do run K&N run the prefliter sock as it practically eliminates water absorbtion by the actual filter. As a matter of fact that is how the socks are marketed to the watercraft crowd. Not as dust shields. Just my experience.

I installed the RE-0880/25-0880 combination a while back. The turbo whistle sounds great but the suction noise is somewhat annoying. I have not had any problems with the system, I am going to try to fabricate some sort of bracket to hold the filter exactly where I want it. Also, before you install the pre-filter be sure to oil it good. I ordered my filters from Checker Auto Parts-total price with tax was just over $80. I was wondering if the same filter without the prefilter was as loud as my setup, I would take mine off but it is really messy (oily), and it is not easy to get the foam prefilter on and off. Not sure about the wet factor in this application, it has not rained here in a long, long time. That's my 2 cents worth.
