Edge EZ to controll boost reading??

I removed my air filter to clean it and when I took the prefilter off, low and behold, signs that my filter had collapsed. There were crimp marks int the screen about 6-7 inches above the base like it had collapsed then returned to normal shape. I am pretty sure I didn't damage it during removal, but who knows for sure. I called K&N and talked to a twit in customer service that deserved a punch in the nose, then talked to Marty the supervisor. Different story there. She was very nice and understanding, and though this doesn't constitute a stock OEM installation, she was willing to warrantee it. . . This time. So one is on the way. What gives? Is this a common problem? I know our turbos "suck" but not that much! Maybe it had a little flaw that predisposed it to collapse. Anyways, K&N is taking care of me and I thought it was worth reporting. What's in YOUR Psychotty?:p Some of you guys with the "Big Turbos", has this happened to you?

Happened to mine, too, but I wasn't sure if it got hit with an elbow while I was working on the truck, or if it collapsed. If it collapsed:eek: that's mind-blowing, hard to imagine that kinda suction other than a parking lot vacuum truck, or a 500 dollar hooker.

I've found that the RE is very easy to "dent" without too much effort ..... elbow, hands, etc. Easy to correct, but once the pleats are bent out of a straight line, I can't get them to return to perfect alignment.

I all but destroyed my first RE-0880 by sealing off the back side of the Psychotty air system. (Scotty told me not to) The AFE replacement has run for quite some time with no problems with the back sealed. IMO the AFE is alot tuffer filter(thicker screen)

I'm living at 47-50 psi boost with the HX40, and no collapse at all. I did, however, find years ago with my Mustang (R. I. P. CYAL8TR) that if the wire mesh is touched enough of times, it will distort much easier.

Newf, the very same thing happened to Rob Hanson (K&N RE-0880 covered with a 25-0880 prefilter). He discovered this maybe 3-5 months ago. It sure would be nice what is really happening to these filters.

He too was thinking about possible damage while servicing/enhancing his Ram however, after looking how badly it was squished/mangled, it looked more like it was run over.:eek:

(BTW, the aforementioned damage DID NOT occur during servicing/enhancing his Ram).

I too can collapse my RE-0880.

But I am not hearing the same story as mine. I can actually collapse my filter on demand. With how quick Piers Hx-35 turbo spools up, I can run down the highway at 55 mph... romp on the go pedal and just collapse the filter in a matter of seconds.

I haven't ran the AFE filter, but I have inspected one... and I do have to say that it didn't impress me at all. It had just as many pinholes as the K&N's do and didn't seem much stronger.

I really don't want to run the BHAF, but I wish there was a stronger, better filtering cone filter on the market. Any ideas?

Kev

Boy, if the 0880 is collapsing from not being able to flow as much as the engine is demanding, then I don't know what other filter will flow more. Maybe a "Y" with 2 K&Ns or a reinforcing cage for the inside of the filter. Mmmmm... ...

:D :D :D Digging up old threads, TMTT? :D It's kinda fun to go back and see what we all had to say back then... .

I have AFE's on both trucks now... . No signs of collapsing, but I never could get that guy in the vacuum truck to stop long enough to let me hook one to the hose... :D And I'm not even gonna try finding 4 1/2" lips on anyone...

Same here

A few years ago we started getting complaints of failed 0880 filters. We immediately tried to get a solution and it came in the form of aFe. K&N was no help. Actually when we approached them to supply us... we never even got a reply.

Several folks with the 20-40044 filters are totally happy with it in the Scotty Air II... the system that Sucks COoOoOOoOOoL air and reduces EGT's more then anything else out there. :D
