well, I cleaned mine today... wow was it filthy. I also took out my Intake Air Temp Sensor to see if it had any dirt/gunk on it. It was perfectly clean. Hmmmm either all the gunk is getting stuck in the intercooler, or K&N's really do work.

On a side note, my Dad's '99 auto has the same milage on it as mine. He uses the OEM filter. Guess what? He has the same ammount of oily build up on the turbo that I do.

Diesel Freak

Glad to read that your K&N is working correctly. I understand that if you know what you are doing and oil it right it will work great. Most of the problems I bet with K&N's are related to pilot error. I'm sticking with the OEM because I can't fly :D Like Clint Eastwood said "a man needs to know his limitations" :)

I just pulled my IAT sensor last week and same thing it's clean. Kinda suprised K+N since new.

I wonder how many are using the squirt bottle recharger-kit instead of the aerosol-can?I used the squirt bottle once and threw it out because I overoiled the filter being real carefull.

Good thing it wasn't on the 24 valve.

I use the aerosol also. I have used K&N's in my vehicles for the last 8 years with no problems. I think Big Toy hit the nail on the head with his Pilot Error statement.

I totally agree - I've seen just as much black stuff on the turbo fins of stock filter equipped trucks as I've seen on mine with the K&N.

Guess I need to pull my IAT and see how clean it is.

I have a k&N also, and I love mine. Yes I have the black markings on my fins as well. So others are have the Black fins with the other air filters. Thats good to here. I do have a question though. You all were talking about oiling the filter. How much oil are you all using? You say use the spray can instead of the pump. Do you use the whole can? Diesel Dog, You get allitle better power but mainly sound. The turbo will spool alot faster ( flowing more air Quicker). Thanks for the info guys!;)

I use then in my Corvette's and they help. You oil them just enough to turn the gauze red. Areosol cans work good but so does t spay bottle just let it sit a bit before running so it spreads out. I just use t so one is always dry and clean and ready to be oiled.

Pilot error.....for sure.

Kimrey.....

These K&N's need to be dry as can be before re-oiling. I only do mine with hot summer sun available. After washing I let the filter hang on a line in the sun for 4-5 hours before attempting to re-oil. When it's clean and dry, the pleats will be kinda grey-whiteish/faded/not dark red... . :)

The aerosol gives you more control. Just oil the pleats until they take back the red color. Then, I let the filter sit for another few hours to let any over oiling pool, and check to make sure I got full coverage. So, for me, this is mostly an all day project, but it works and I've never had any sign of oil anywhere.

I've put 26K on my RE-0880 and pre-filter. The pre-filter has been cleaned once... . didn't really need it, but I wanted to try the process. The RE still looks like it came out of the box.

I think the RE sucks a lot more air than the stock box... . quicker spool up, more turbo whine... . I think it enhances performance. I won't go back to my stock box unless my soon to be Piers turbo sucks and blows cotton gauze out my exhaust.

Most of us, including me, have grown tired of the K&N wars. But, since the archives don't go back so far anymore, I think the newer TDR members who want info on K&N and other choices deserve input from all sides.

Always your choice... ...
