I'm taking care of the KDP as part of my PDR camshaft/lifters installation on a 40K engine. Should I install a new front crankshaft seal, or will the original be OK if it's still good?

Consider this. If the seal is not good then you have to take the whole mess apart again to replace it properly.

I see you are in Northern CA. Anywhere near Eureka?

I'm in Auburn, about 4 hours from you...

Hey britannic - I'm in Cool, work in Auburn. Where are you taking your Dodge to be worked on? I need the KDP checked, bought all the parts from Cummins West in W. Sac. to tab it, but have been waiting (and sweating it) for two mos. for my mechanic boyfriend to fix it. I have had bad luck at the Dodge dealer in Auburn. Any suggestions?

I'm doing the work myself... You need to lean on your mechanic boyfriend and get it done pdq, 'coz it's going to be costly.

seal

I just had mine replaced by a qualified cummins mechanic whose experience includes mostly the big ones, he said that one of the things to watch out for is not to get any greese or oil on the seal before installing which includes oil from your fingers. got mine at cummins which includes a wear sleeve to compensate for wear on crank seal surface. mine needed it as the motor has 600,000 on it and there was a groove in the crank. this is my third seal so I guess they last about 200,000 miles each. stormy

When removing the front cover, you will drag the seal across any crud on the crank snout. Also, if you look around you will probably see evidence that the seal has been leaking some (oily dirt build up).
