Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) Exhaust brackets?

My next project will be to tab my KDP. My engine is covered with oil and seems to leak from everywhere. I will, of course, take it to the car wash and clean it all as best I can first. All this crud sure makes it hard to identify specific leaks right now. Surprisingly, I don't lose much oil in between changes according to my dipstick.

The valve cover gaskets are definitely leaking down both sides of my motor, but I already have new Felpros and will replace them when I do the valve lash.

My stock clutch is still going strong after 150K miles, but it and the rear main seal will get replaced when I put the NV5600 and SBC clutch in. That rear seal sounds like an adventure in itself.

So does the front crank seal and timing cover seal/gasket.

Can anyone supply me with a list of parts (numbers would be very helpful) of what all I need to buy before I tear into doing the KDP tab? Nothing like not having what you need on a Sunday and your truck in pieces...

Assume, like I do, that the front seal(s) and gaskets are leaking like everything else seems to on this motor.

I'm not looking forward to doing the R&R required for the KDP tab, my '96 12-valve is my transportation; not my hobby (yet), but the potential alternative sure doesn't look pretty and I will appreciate the peace of mind. The old "don't fix what isn't broke" adage sure doesn't apply in the case of the KDP!

CumminsDatabase.com :: 12V Dowel Pin Repair (website)

This is a step by step procedure on the projet. It also has demensions for the KDP tab so that you can make it. We have a part # for a 95 truck for the crank seal but not the gear case seal. Federal Mogul Part #39803. Price

$28. 05 and that includes plastic sleeve to jelp install.

Does the plastic sleeve then come out and does it come out easily? Seems there was a recent post where someone had an extra plastic ring and was having trouble either using it or figuring out what it was for... ? Maybe that was a rear main seal. . ?

I'll check out that database for sure. The dowel pin tab seems to be well-covered and straightforward, but I'm having trouble locating good photos and info on the seal(s). [Are there two or only one?]

Thanks!

The black plastic ring that is included in the front seal kit is a dust cover to reduce the amount of dirt that can get on the seal. Put it on the nose of the crank after the seal is installed. The plastic installer guide can be a little bit confusing. Just follow the instructions. It will fall off or be very easy to remove when the seal is in place correctly on the crank.

Thank you Joe. That makes good sense. Is it common at all to find a groove worn in the crank? If so, are there Ready Sleeves available to give the new seal a fresh surface? Am I likely to need one?

on our 95 truck,we have 185000 miles. There was no ridge or groove of any type. However the truck sat in the barn while we waiting for the gear case to be welded, it was hot and humid,and the crank, where the seal rides,rusted a little. Not much,but I was concerned. I used some xtra fine steel wool on it and it shined up just fine.

There is a depth gage tool in the seal kit. However, the position of the seal is not really important so you can install it so that it is not in the groove if there is one. Use the depth gage to get it right and straight. Then tap it in a little bit more.
