I just bought a 95 twelve valve. I was wondering if the damage from the killer dowel pin can be seen. The previous owner said "The killer what" when I asked him if it had been fixed. It is dry on the spot that the pictures show the case cracks. It has an oil leak from the pan but I was wondering how much oil leaks out of the case when it is cracked.

Thanks

Steve

This is along the same lines, not meaning to hi-jack the thread. I was looking at a truck that had the pin fall out and crack the case. The owner did not replace the cover but rather used JB weld on it. I didnt pursue the truck any further after I found this out as I thought you were supposed to replace the cover. Can anyone clear this up for me, is this an acceptable fix?

I have heard of others fixing it this way. If it stopped the leak I guess it was a sucess. that being said I wouldn't recommend it as a fix. I also wouldn't like the pin laying around loose. Bad things can happen

A friend of mine had one strike on his 94 but it did not crack the case. It fell out, cut a groove in the case cover and broke off a piece of the gear case on the inside cutting the gasket. He had an oil leak that was about a quart every 1500 miles or so if I remember right. He actually felt the engine drag down one day and not long after had the oil leak. Not until he got into the case did he see the damage. A lucky one none the less. Here's a pic.
