OK, I'm on the list for the jig, but I've been putting off a leaky front seal for too long. It looks like it's getting to the point that I should replace it.

How hard is it to do the tab method? How hard, and are there any special tools needed to remove the front cover on the engine? The seal? How much time does this usuially take? Where can I get a tab, or can I just make one up?

Does anyone have a link for directions and part numbers needed to do this? Anything I should be looking out for?

I would like to bump up the timing a little, but I'm not sure how?

I'd be happy for any input or pointers.

I just did mine last night. I got directions from Joe G. and a tab from R. Ebel. It took me about 2 1/2 hours with some air tools and a few breaks now and then. I left the fan shroud on. If you take the top radiator hose off completely, the fan slips right out. The crank seal was the toughest job. Its a tight sucker getting it in the case, but all went well. I took a chance and just used high tack and the gasket for the cover rather than silicone. (no leaks yet):rolleyes: I also did my valve cover gaskets and o-rings and the oil fill seal while I was at it. If the pin has moved, you might have to take off the fan shroud to drive it back in cause it is a little tight. Mine was still flush. I'm 6'4 165, so I have long skinny arms. I did most of the work from the bottom side, more room down there. :D

The most difficult part for me was the seal. The instructions are very poor. The service manual proceedure is some what helpful. I learned by trail and error. The seal comes with a seating tool. They say to use lock tite but I coated the outside shell of the seal with hightack. Tap the seal into the cover with a brass punch to get it started. Then place the tool with the raised side down over the seal. tap around evenly till the tool seats flush. Cummins used a nice gasket sealer on the cover. The old stuff just pealed right off with no cleaning. I used just silicon high temp. Clean the crankshaft . There must be no oil on the shaft. Place the plastic guide into the seal from inside the cover. The larger side should face the shaft. Then line the plastic guide up with the end of the crankshaft. Slide the cover into place. Remove the plastic guide. Bolt down the cover. The plastic guide keeps the lips of the seal from folding the wrong way. The little black rubber seal goes on befor you put the vibration damper back. Its a dust boot. Larger side faces the cover seal. I had a hard time holding the ring gear with screw driver to torque the damper bolts. Buy the barring tool. The right tools always make for an easier job. Good luck killing the pin.
