I just read in a new post that the KDP problem is a 12V "feature".



Is that so? Did DC fix the situation just because they went to 24V design? :confused:

By your sig, 98. 5's are possible candidates for the problem Dowel pin. the new gear case was to be used with the 24 valve engine. But they continued to use the old case till they were gone. so if you are concerned, your are not out of the woods. do it with a jig if your crank seal is not leaking. This is what the guys are doing now and when the seal needs replacement and the cover is off they tab it and check all the bolts inside for the proper torque which is 18 ft lbs. not much, so they all feel lose. do search (on the 12 valve FAQ) here and check # 43 issue of the TRD mag. this subject re-acures very often.

You can listen to whatever advice you get... but you have to check for yourself. There is no way of knowing without taking your front cover off. Cummins Inc cannot help determine this. Serial numbers or dates will NOT do any good either.
 
The engine series numbers was posted or listed a while back for the 98. 5's. but later years are still effected. up to 2000 I believe. the pins have dropped on some of these, that was supposed to be NO PROBLEM.

Jig it & don't worry. If the pin were to fall it could create all sorts of problems. You have three choices... .



1) Jig fix... Easist by far



2) tab method... . Tear the front of the engine apart to remove timing gear cover



3) do nothing & roll the dice



Choices, Choices! I chose the "Jig" method. Easy & Fast. The KDP can go no-where with a bolt directly in front of the pin holding it in place.
