Ok so I'm sorry to put this in 911 but I have my truck apart and I don't want to put it back together without the KDP fixed.

I took off the timing gear cover and was going to tab my KDP but when I looked at it the rib wasn't the same as the picture I got for tabbing. Actually the "rib" is more of a plateau. The hole to the KDP is raise about 1/4" from where the bolt surfice is and I can only feel the pin with a screwdriver "can't really see it in the hole" What I'm wondering is did someone else already loose the kdp once and fixed it with a upgraded gear housing that has a smaller hole so the pin doesn't come out? I could be happy with this but I don't want to put it together to have it break later.

thanks

Steve

never mind

I finally found someone talking about the new gear housing and they said the new casting sticks out further and there is no place for a tab. So I'm going to feel pretty good assuming that is the housing I have and have mixed feelings about being happy the housing is the newer better design and uneasy about not knowing what happened when the KDP killed the truck and what was replaced.

Thanks

Steve

Steve:

Can you post a pic or give us the part no if you seen it stamped on the housing? It's likely on one of the flat straps, maybe behind the cam gear. .

Has the housing been repainted with "titanium black" to match the rest of the engine? Is it missing the data tags on the gear housing? Does it look like the data tags have been put back on (look carefully at the drive-in rivets, are scratches on the tag, where its been on or off. . rivet area)?

Have DC run the vin, they may have changed it and it be in the warranty history?

Sounds like you have the updated cover. .

That good, I just had a customers truck last weekend to pull the cam and r&r a broken housing. .

The dowel pin was stuck in the edge of the cover and in an area, female bolt recess, on the gear housing, which was missing part of the casting due to being "between the rock and hard place". . :(

Good luck

Andy

Very sorry to report that with the time frame I was running on I didn't get a pic or a part # before I had to get the engine back together.

I do have to say I'm pretty certain I have the new one cause even if I wanted to I wouldn't have been able to put in a tab.

I'll see what I can find out off the VIN with the dealership and see if they have any ideas.

I'll post any more info I get. Sorry about not getting the picture but I didn't have a camera here and I couldn't wait on it. If anyone happens to have a picture I'd be happy to look at a new one and verify that its the updated one. Maybe I'll go out to Cummins and get a pic if they have one.

Thanks

Steve

I just went through the KDP/tab/replaced gear housing routine. It sounds like the housing you have is the updated housing. The new one I installed had a raised area that was stepped down on the inside for tab slippage prevention. There was no possible way to tab it with the new housing. You are very fortunate.
