Before tackling the job, if I use the KDP jig and drill the gear cover of my 99 24V (built 11/98, possibly a KDP candidate), will I be able to see if the actual pin is still properly seated in its bore. I realize if you drill and hit something, it most likely is the pin half way out. But if you drill and hit nothing, am I to assume the pin is still in there, or is it reasonable to assume maybe it fell out but didn't cause any damage (yet). Just wondering if you can shine a very small light (fiberoptic) in there and see anything but a black abyss. Otherwise, I'll use the KDP jig fix and remove the cover anyway to make sure its still there (plus give it a little tap or two).

PS: I figured if anyone would know this it would be the 12V forum. Thanks.

I'm no expert, but i did do the jig fix. It's a pretty small hole and I doubt you will see anything in there. I suppose if you are a proctologist and have the equipment for seeing in a tight hole, go for it. :D

If the pin has fallen out, I think there would be damage already. I don't think there is anyplace for it to "hide out" or fall thru without causing damage.

Just do the jig fix if it's available to you. You will sleep better. (thanks to CPFF)

Neil,

There are some cases where the pin fell out and a blue mishapen chuck was found in the gear case. That is pretty rare. Usually if it falls out it breaks the gear case and you have magnum leak. If you fix it using the tab method you have to take the cover off the gear case so the condition of the KDP is in plain sight.
