It would be nice if someone would sell one of those flexable scopes small enough to get over the gears to see if your pin is moving out or not. Oh I know they sell something like that but it probably has a medical term for it and costs more than the truck.

I have seen a larger one used to look in walls but it's to large for our purpose. Does anyone know of an automotive tool sold that would help? Now this is a tool that could be passed around with the Jig. Drill or don't have to drill. Dismantle and tab or peace of mind. Sound good?

We don't know over how many miles the pin comes out after it starts moving. If you find it isn't moving, how long will it be good?

I have inspected 10 so far. 8 were moving, or at least not all the way into the hole in the block. One was OK. On it, the bolts, while not very tight, at least had sealer on them so they wouldn't easily vibrate out. The tenth one had the dowel pin not moving, but some of the bolts were loose and they had no sealer on them. Thus, out of 10, 9 were due to have problems some time in the future. Not good odds. Problems seem to surface any time after about 60,000 miles.

We forum members pretty much agree that everyone should fix the problem with a screw or tab, and remove, clean, and loctite the accessible bolts inside the cover that hold it to the block (you can get to 4 out of 5). Check torque on the oil pump and camshaft retainer bolts. Trying to assign blame doesn't fix it, and once fixed, the engine is fine.
