I'm looking to buy a 98 12V Cummins truck. I'm having it looked at locally by a shop with a certified Cummins tech. I've talked to the previous owner. It's hundreds of miles from me.

The shop there, quoted me 4 hours Plus parts for 500.00. Local shop here quoted 250.00. But I have to drive it all the way back and would like to have it fixed there in Centralia wa. I need a recommendation I can trust.

Who do I call to perform this repair.

Thank you

I am unclear from your post where you are located, BUT if in the Seattle area, I would recommend Pacific Diesel Service in Monroe. In Portland area as mentioned, Source Auto would probably be good, they did some track bar upgrades for me previously, no experience with their engine work, BUT I would guess it is good.

If the KDP is all your worried about I'd drive it home and have it fixed at your leisure. The truck is 20 years old, at this point and time its either been previously taken care of or if it hasnt its a safe bet the dowel isnt going anywhere in the next few hundred miles . Seriously, you have better odds of hitting the lottery. Unless there is more to the story.

If you have basic mechanical skill it is an easy job once you get it home. No special tools or expertise required. Many folks here can even walk you through it if you have any questions.

Yeah if I can do it, anyone can but I wouldn't call it easy. Just make sure you have everything because it took me a couple of weeks because I didn't have the correct loctite's. My shop wanted almost a grand just for labor. And the big one is, I know it was done right.

There's a good private shop out by the Tenino Speedway on the RH side heading towards Tenino. He's running a good shop. Very busy but good work. The owner (Jerry) is very matter-of-fact and some people don't like that, but he'll tell you straight up if your truck is a pile or not.

As the crow flies about 10 minutes from Centralia. I trusted him with my dad's truck when I was out of town and they didn't disappoint.

*THAT SAID* Local labor prices in western WA are going around $100-125/hr for a good diesel shop. Caveat emptor.
