hello, maybe someone can help me, i have a 12 valve and know about the kdp pin... i have a couple of friends that have 24v's and recently heard they had problems with the kdp also... does anyone know what year models have the kdp, or is there a way to check your timing cover to see if it is a modified timing cover case... any info would be appreciated... thanks alot

The magazine Diesel Power recently (May or June issue, the one where they explain how lots of stuff works - trying to remember what was on the cover) ran an article on the KDP; I don't have the magazine in front of me, but it had a walk-through of how to remove everything on the front of the engine, remove the gear cover, tab the pin, etc... .

The mag is like 5 bucks; might have the info you need.

june 2007 ,volume3, no. 6 of DIESEL POWER starts on page 160-164, though it states that the pin is only a problem on 89-98. 5 trucks. says PDR and REDLINE were their sources.

96's to early 99's is what I've read in TDR mag and site. I don't think I've read/heard about 89's to 95's having the kdp come out. 97's and 98's are prone to the problem.

I have an '01 and am still trying to figure out if I need to kill the kdp on it... according to info I've found with the search, people have had problems as late as '02 :( but then others have the new gear cover that won't let the pin fall out... . I donno... . maybe I'll just take it apart on a Saturday or something and see. Might have a cheap parts set for sale if it's a non-factor.

From what I have read it is hit and miss on the 24 valves and there is no way to know what you have until you pull the cover, which I would surely do if I had one. I too read about an 02 that had the problem as well as years below that. In the 12 valves it's for sure '89-'98. I just did a '96 not long ago and it had moved about 1/8". I have tabbed one '95, two '96's, two '97's and my '98 12v. If I remember right all but one of the '97's had moved but none more than an 1/8". My uncles '98 12v, which someone else worked on, was just about to fall out!

I just ordered my KDP kit from PDR yesterday (donno if I can say that - someone please correct me if I'm on the wrong side of the endorsement rules), should be here in about a week. Now I'll be holding my breath because Murphy's Law states that my KDP will do its thing and fall out the morning I'm planning on checking/tabbing it.
