My brother owns a 12V 98 CTD and I've been telling him that he may want to do the KDP fix. However, when I did a search on this thread, I found one that stated that Cummins had fixed this problem in 1998, including 12Vs. If you own a 98 12V, how do you know if it is needed, and if you do the fix, anyway, using the KDP jig, will it damage anything if it has already been fixed by Cummins?

22% of the folks who have reported kdp failure in the poll at the top of this forum own '98s...

Cummins started replacing the case with an improved one in early '98 but didn't run out of the old style until early '99. If the '98 was built in '97 it for sure has the old case.

So your saying 3 hours worth of work doing the tab method is too much, but pulling the hole front of the motor and truck apart to pull the cam out to replace the case if it comes loose and breaks is ok... . I don't get it! Fix it then never worry about it again.

Peace of Mind!

In my opinion no since failure is a rare occurrence and doesn't cause injury/death, but they should cover the cost of repair for the life of the engine since it's a design flaw. Cummins doesn't do either though so it's up to the owner to perform some cheap insurance on his engine or hope/pray he isn't one of the few with a failure. The choice is an easy one for me especially when you consider the odds of failure are over a thousand times greater than winning the lottery.

I'm sure there's enough evidence to take Cummins to court and force them to cover the cost of repairs, it's been done with many other design flaws, but who has the time or money to fight a large corporation?

Jim... I think you missed my point. I wanted to know if there was any way to tell if a 98 had the improved fix, but more importantly, I wanted to know if the KDP jig was used to fix it, can you cause more damage to the cover, or the inside, if it has already been fixed by Cummins.

I guess I did come off wrong or sounding wrong, It just seems for the 15 Months I've been on the TDR too many have come one here debating about fixing it or looking for a mileage to check it (It's not a timing belt so there is no mileage gouge to go by) It's just so easy to fix by either method it's crazy to let it go. I pulled my cover off and my pin was in solid but I still put a tab on it. Have your brother call Piers about doing it for him if he doesn't want to wait for a jig, or if he wants to do it his self Joe George has the instructions, so do I, Piers even sells the tabs it you can't make them, Sorry for the confusion.

illflem... Thanks for the info. That's what I was looking for. Already know about the NWBombers weekend, but want to get the facts straight before asking my brother to drive up and get it fixed while we're attending the Bombers gathering... ;)

Guess, I'm either lucky, or I dont beat on it enough. :D

When I did my KDP, I tabbed it (oil leak, the cover had to come off anyway) and it was flush to . 005~ish out. :D

Mine is one of the last 12 valvers. Built Oct. 97.

The Killer Dowel Pin is a locator pin so the gear case is precise in it's location on the block. The problem is that the hole in the gear case is open and the KDP can vibrate out. When that happens it falls in the gears. If you are very very lucky it ends up in the pan and you never know it fell out. If your are very very unlucky it breaks the end off the cam shaft or breaks the front main bearing cap. This requires a new engine. If you have normal luck when this happens it breaks a hole in the gear case and you have a magnum oil leak. Fixing it is expensive and/or a lot of work. There are two ways to prevent this little devil from getting you; using a special jig to install a blocking screw (see illflem) or installing a blocking "tab" (see me).

what is the KDP and should I worry on my 95 with 112,000 miles??
Follow this link for a pretty good article or do a "search" in the 12V Engine/Drivetrain forum on KDP. You will find mucho info. Seeing you have a 95' with 112K, you should read the threads on starter contacts. Check out Larry B for those or pick up locally. http://www.flex.net/~triplem/new/dowelpin.htm

With 112,000 on a 95 your are on borrowed time. I have done three of them now with the KDP jig. No problem. If you dont take care of this problem now you may be sorry later. See the article in the latest TDR mag about thisw very problem. Tick Tick Tick Ka-Boom. Just do it. ;)

Thanks for the information

I just sent an Email to one of the shops that is listed as having the jig, it is about 70 miles from me so one can hope I can make it down there to have them fix it

I got the kit Thursday afternoon, did the fix today and will ship it out Monday. Great kit with very clear instructions, well worth a couple of hours for the peace of mind.

the shop I emailed sent me a reply already

they said they charge $150 for the fix, is this a reasonable price, unfortunatly, I do not think I have the tools to do it myself right now, nor can I get the truck in my garage and it is just alittle cold right now:p
