KDP or TIMING BOLTS on 1 st generation

Well guys, I didn't think this affected our trucks, I thought all of this happened when they went to the P 7100 pump. But, 1 lawnman said the timing bolt covers came out of his 1992 and ruined his mighty Cummins, has anyone else had this problem with a 1st generation or was this just a freak accident!!!!!!!
 
J, did you mean the bolts that are threaded into the timing case cover, such as the accessory drive for the vac pump and injector pump? If so, then Yes, I check mine when i'm under looking around with wrenches. I don't know if our B engines have a real problem, BUT I know the C series do! We had a fleet of about 100 of them and we went through plenty of timing cases in a few years. The first time I checked mine (about 25K miles) they weren't loose, but they weren't as tight as I would like them to be.
 
Hey 1 Lawnman, did you get your rig torn down yet? What did you find out? How do you access these bolts that came loose? Is this a very rare instance? Sorry to hear about this, must be very expensive:eek:

TORE MY TRUCK DOWN AND TOOK MOTOR OUT. BOY IS THAT BLOCK HEAVY!!! PULLED THE HEAD OFF VALES JUST TOUCH THE PISTONS. BROKE THE CAM IN THREE PLACES MOTOR LOOKS GOOD STARTED TO CALL AROUND FOR A NEW MOTOR THIS IS WHAT I FOUND



NEW REBUILD FROM CUMMINS 5800. 00

92 WITH 100,000 MILES 3000. 00

91 WITH 100,000 MILES 3500. 00

COMPLETE MOTOR AND TRANS 3500. 00

REBUILD MY MOTOR 2500. 00 PLUS ALL HEAD WORK AND LABOR



DROVE 200 MILES TO LOOK AT MOTOR AND TRANS. TALKED HIM DOWN TO 3300. 00

PUT MOTOR IN TODAY I WILL FINSH HOOKING EVERY THING UP TOMMORROW

I WILL ALSO PULL TIMMING COVER TO CHECK BOLTS AND FIX KDP BEFORE I START TRUCK



I WILL HAVE A COMPLETE MOTOR FOR SALE WITH ALL THE GOODYS, INTER COL. TURBO ECT.

Where is the KDP located and what do you look for? I didn't think this was a problem with our model trucks. Is this a common occurrance for these trucks, why? Tell me more about your 1 st generation ram with 450,000 miles on it, have you had much trouble with it?

WHATS TO TELL 450000 MILES AND I HAVE NOT HAD ANY TROULBE OUT OF THIS TRUCK OR ANY OF MY OTHERS . UNTIL THE KDP CAME UP I WOULDNT EVEN THING ABOUT ANY PROBLEMS COMING UP . BUT AFTER HAVING A BOLT FALL OUT INSIDE THE TIMMING CASE AND SEEING THE DAMAGE FRIST HAND, I CANT AFFORD NOT TO TAKE ALL MY TRUCKS A PART AND CHECK THIS PROBLEM!!!! AT 5 GRAND A WACK , I CANT SEE ANYBODY NOT CHECKING THESE BOLTS!!!!!!



BY THE WAY , PUT MY NEW USED MOTOR IN AND PULLED THE TIMMING CASE COVER, AND WHAT DID I FIND BUT BOLTS THAT I COULD TAKE OUT WITH MY FINGERS. THANK GOODNESS I CHECKED. THIIS MOTOR ONLY HAD 100000 MILES ON IT.

Hey 1 lawnman, how do you find this problem and how do you fix it? What do you do to get teh timing case off, just remove the front cover? We'd like more info, Thanks!

JUST PULL OFF THE TIMMING COVER AND CHECK ALL THE BOLTS INSIDE THE COVER DONT FORGET THE ONES BEHIND THE TIMMING GEAR WE HAD TO PULL OUT CAM ABOUT THREE INCHES TO GET TO THESE REMBER TO PUT THE DOW PINS IN THE LIFTER HOLES FRIST. . PULL OUT EACH BOLT ONE AT A TIME LOCK TIGHT THEM AND PUT THEM BACK . GETTING THE CAM BACK IN CAN BE A BIT TRICKY BUT IT WILL GO BACK IN. YOU WILL HAVE TO TAKE THE ROCKER OUT WHEN YOU INSTALL THE DOW PINS, WHICH MEANS YOU WILL HAVE TO ADJ. THE LIFTERS WHEN YOU PUT IT BACK TOGETHER. WHILE WE WERE IN THE TIMMING CASE WE ALSO CHECKED THE KDP WHICH IS NOT HARD TO FIND, UPER LEFT SIDE BY THE CAM GEAR. WE TOOK A PUNCH BRADED THE HOLE A LITTLE BIT IN THE TIMMING CASE AND ALSO CLEANED IT OUT DRYIT OUT AND APPLYED LOCK TIGHT TO THE HOLE THAT PIN SETS IN

1 lawnman, why is this such a very rare occurrance on our 1 st generation rigs:confused: This is very rare because nobody else said anything about these troubles at all on 1 st generation trucks. What are the chances of this happening to me? Also, could you tell me about your first generation truck with the 450,000 miles on it. This is great. What have you had to do to it, does it still run good, what is the body like, is it stock or modified, thansk a million!

THIS IS THE FRIST TROUBLE I HAVE HAD OUT OF ANY OF MY TRUCKS. YOU SEE I HAVE FOUR 1ST GEN TRUCKS. BUT MY FRIST AND THE ONE WITH THE MOST MILES IS STILL GOING STRONG. LET ME TELL YOU A LITTE ABOUT WHAT I DO.



JOB TITLE LANDSCAPER, OWNER OF A LAWN SERVICE , PART TIME FARMER, IN THE WINTER I PLOW SNOW, AND HAUL FIREWOOD ,

LOADS I HAVE PULLED WITH THIS TRUCK 350 BUSHELS OF CORN GROSSED OUT 31000LBS WHEN I HAUL WOOD I GROSS OUT 28000 AND MY FRIST STOP IS 400 MILES AWAY . 12 MILES A GAL LOADED 20 EMPTY WITH TRAILER JUST TO LET YOU KNOW I DONT LET ANY GRASS GROW UNDER MY FEET WHEN I AM OUT ON THE ROAD 70 MILES PER ALLTHE TIME!!!!



BOUGHT MY FRIST CUMMINS TO SAVE MONEY ON FUEL IT COST ME 20,000 FOR MY 92 WHEN I HIT 200,00 MILES I SAVED ENOUGH MONEY ON FUEL TO PAY FOR THAT TRUCK. I

I PUT A WATER PUMP ON ONCE AND ALL NORMAL WARE PARTS BRAKES, TIRES MASTER CLD. ,THE ONLY TROUBLE I EVER HAD WAS WITH THE OVERDRIVE SENCER I HAVE 14 OF THESE ON IN ITS LIFE TIME I EVEN CARRY ONE IN THE GLOVE BOX!!!! I FOUND THAT PUTTING CONTACT JELL INSIDE THE SENCER SEEMS TO HELP A LOT. HAVENT REPLACED ONE FOR AWHILE.



I HAVENT MADE ANY MOD TO THIS TRUCK OR ANY OF MY OTHERS JUST RUN THEM HARD AND CHANGE THE OIL I DIDNT EVEN CHANGE A BELT UNTIL I HIT 150000 MILES AND ONLY BECASE I NEEDED A PEICE OF MIND. ITS COLD ON THE SIDE OF THE ROAD!!!!

IT STILL RUNS GREAT I SEMI RETIRED IT . IT JUST PULLS THE MOWER TRAILER NOW 5 DAYS A WEEK

AS FOR AS LOOKS ITS PERFECT NO RUST NO DENTS I DID REPAINT ABOUT 2 YEARS AGO BACKED INTO A BRICK PILLER PLOWING SNOW BUT I HAD BEEN UP FOR 36 HRS STRAIT

STILL I DIDNT HAVE ANY RUST AT THAT TIME.

I CHANGE THE TRANS OIL 2 TIMES YEAR AND IT STILL HOLDS AT THE 3/4 MARK ON THE OIL GAGE. OH I ALMOST FORGOT THE WATER PUMP I PUT ON THE BOLTS BROKE IT WAS THE PUMP. BUT I FIGURE WHILE I AM THERE WHY NOT A NEW PUMP

AS TO THIS BOLT PROBLEM INSIDE THE TIMMING CASE GOT MY USED MOTOR IN AND CHECKED THE BOLTS JUST TO BE SURE , TOOK ONE OUT WITH MY FINGERS 2 MOTORS INTHE SAME TRUCK IN THE SAME YEAR BECAUSE OF A BOLT I THING NOT!!!!!

THIS TRUCK I AM WORKING ON IS MY OTHER 92 I BOUGHT USED

I have been following your discussion with JDMAIO and was wondering if you have contacted anyone at Cummins to see if this is a new found problem? Or, do you know if there is a Tech. Service Bulliten on this problem? I am curious as my '92 has 170,000 miles on it and I would sure hate to have anything happen to it. Thanks.

I EMAILED CUMMINS AND GUESS WHAT ? I GOT THE SAME STORY EVERY BODY GOT ABOUT THE KDP!! YOU KNOW, WE REALY DONT HAVE A PROBLEM BUT IT HAS HAPPEN IN JUST A FEW CASES BUT NOT TO WORRY

WELL CASE 500D THIS IS WHAT THEY SHOULD HAD SAID... ...

WE KNOW WE HAVE A PROBLEM BUT, WE ARE NOT GOING TO SPEND ANY OF OUR MONEY ON YOUR TRUCK SO..... YOU ARE ON YOUR ON!!!!!! BESIDES IF ABOLT FALLS OUT YOU WILL SPEND 5000 ON A NEW MOTOR WITH US ANY WAY!!!!!



JUST TO LET YOU KNOW DID TRUCK #2 LAST NIGHT KDP OK BUT FOUND TWO LOSE BOLTS
