I have 50k on my truck and I'm getting nervous! A friend had his pin go at 63k. He gave me his broken housing to make a drill jig but I think I'll remove the cover and make a tab instead. How does the balancer come off? Is a puller required, center hole threaded for a jack bolt or??? TIA, Craig

GO FOR THE TAB. I WAS GONNA WAIT FOR THE JIG, BUT I NEED MY TRUCK, AND WAS AFRAID TO WAIT ANY LONGER. I WENT DOWN TO MY LOCAL CUMMINS SHOP AND PICKED UP THE NEW GASKET & SEAL. HAD HER DONE THE NEXT DAY IN ABOUT 4 HOURS OR SO. (there was a pizza break in there somewhere):D I MADE MY TAB FROM SOME FLAT STOCK STEEL I HAD LAYING AROUND. SOME GUYS I HEAR ARE USING SAWS-ALL BLADES TO MAKE THE TAB. GOOD LUCK WHICH EVER ROUTE YOU TAKE.

P. S. MINE AT 107,000 HAD

NOT MOVED. AND LEAVE

THAT FAN SHROUND IN

SAVE 40mins. OR SO.

Craig, if you do the tab, relax. The job is not bad at all. When I did mine I had a nice tab made up but decided not to use it since my pin had only moved a few tho. in 90k. Instead I peened the housing and used penetrating Lock-tite. Also lock-tited the other bolts in the vicinity.

If you haven't changed your timing, and remove the cover, it'd be a shame not to add a few degrees of timing while you're in there. I didn't, but sure wish I had.

Thanks guys for all the good tips! The timing is already done. I decided to do the tab after seeing how easy the cover comes off - just didn't know about the balancer. Jim, it's getting late - I'll e-mail you later. Thanks again, Craig

Got my tab and gaskets the other day. I'm going to do mine at work next week. (I love night shift). :p Can you go into a little more detail about the timing while the cover is off? Is this something seperate from the pump timing?

Sorry if this is a dumb question. I'm just a parts changer... LOL

Dont forget to check tightness of the two cam retainer bolts and 4 oil pump bolts. Remove, clean bolts and holes in block with solvent and compressed air. Loctite in the 4 bolts you can get to (two are accessed through windows in the cam gear), out of 5 holding the gear case to the block.

Hummin Cummins, I was refering to the pump timing. With the gear cover off the front of the engine, access to the pump gear is very easy. No need to access through the oil filler neck hole.
