I have a 96 that I bought back in early march... Was planning to do the KDP, and started inspecting the timing cover, it looks to have grey silicone sealing it already. Could this mean the KDP has been done, or possibly the cover was removed prior and just resealed with grey silicone instead of an actual gasket? I dont think the factory/dealer uses silicone...

was thinking about possibly drilling+tapping for a plug at the approx location for a viewport whether the kdp has been fixed or not... I have all the tools available, and a proper plug... might have to procure an aluminum plug tho. Anyone have measurements of where the kdp lies on the front of the housing?

tnx

gray silicone was used from the factory along with the gasket so it has probably not been done. The best way is to pull the cover so you can check the bolts in there too as they can fall out as well. I pulled my bolts, cleaned everything and reinstalled with thread locker.

In the picture: A is where the pin is supposed to be and B is where it wedged between the gear and the housing cracking it.

I'd just jig it and be happy. That would be less work than trying to cut and plug a hole to take a look at it.

Cummins recommends their own gray silicone for the cover gasket. I used it. Good stuff. The counter guy called it "goo. "

So, it could be the OEM silicone, later cummins silicone, or AutoZone silicone. I wouldn't chance it.
