Alright I have my gear cover off, that fan liked to have whipped my A#$, I like to have never got it to break free, not to mention the fan belt that I think is way shorter than it should be, I'm going to make me a tab, as well as staking it also, I've read on hear to check the case bolts,

#1 Are all the case bolts accessible or do I have to pull some of the gears?

#2 Is there only one dowel to worry about or is there a few of them?

#3 What # Loctite do I need to use on the bolt by the dowel pin?

#4 Do I need to loctite all the case bolts to the block?

#5 What other bolts or anything to check before sewing this thing up?

Thanks guys

You can get to all the bolts. One is tight. . it's behind the cam gear@4:00. I use a 10mm open bent at a 45°

Count;

5 inside the case behind the cover(case to block mounting cap screws)

2 cam plate to engine block caps. Behind the cam gear. Easily accessed by moving the cam gear to the desired local

I have always used the RED lock-tite

There are also 4 oil pump to engine caps

Only one dowel pin that can/will fall out

Remove/clean holes and caps and lock-tite all the cap screws that are in there. The ones outboard the cover can be secured w/lock-tite as well. However, I used a pipe sealer/gasket maker/aviation thread sealant on them.

Install a new crank seal and cover gasket.

Greenleaf, I got 3 case to block bolts and I used Blue Loctite, I hope this will work, what do you think? I got the 2 cam bolts with blue Loctite, all bolts went 18 ft lbs according to my Cummins service manual. I tried the oil pump gear bolts but they seemed tight. The 3 case bolts were loose enough to make me sick to my stomach, I don't believe I would have had a dowel pin problem, but gurrantee those 3 case bolts would have HURT me. I looked and couldn't see anymore case bolts, I hope 3 is alll there is, please let me know.

1 more thing is my crankshaft right at the end had a light scoring on it, I took some scotch brite and polished it till most of it was gone but you could still feel it lightly, will this be ok? :confused:

Install the new crank seal to a different depth so it uses a fresh part of the crank snout. I hve never seen a problem with cam or oil pump bolts; I just check them to be sure they are still tight (always are). One gear case bolt is above the oil pump, one next to the dowel pin above the cam gear and toward the passenger side. Two are accessible through windows in the cam gear, but you have to rotate the engine to get them separately. The fifth is the one towards the bottom that you need the bent wrench to reach through the window in the cam gear, toward the driver's side. Several back issues of TDR go into details, such as #40, p. 56.

Well that means I missed 1 behind the cam gear and the1 towards the driver side, is it behind one of the gears, I'm doing this with the radiator still in the truck and I'm using an inspection mirror to find them, sorry for so many questions, I had looked but didn't see anymore,as it is pretty tough this way, maybe should have dumped the radiator but to late now, I will rotate motor and get the other 1 behind cam gear.

:{ Well thats all I can say, but I only like 2 bolts and 1 is easy, the other I dont know about bending 1 of my wrenches????? and the KDP is history, it only moved about 1/4" its those D#$N bolts that worry me, they were so loose it wasn't even funny. :--)

I have found, like many others, that the later model trucks (1997 or so) have lock-tite installed on the inner case bolts. Heck, they probably installed the stuff on all of 'em, but I don't recall.

I have never found the oil pump and cam retainer caps loose either.

Scott when I did my truck. My cam retainer plate bolts I could turn with my fingers. Both had no torque on them at all.

my oil pump gear bolts were tight, the cam gear bolts were not, not near as loose as those case bolts though, case bolts, well lets just say this, I'd had real trouble with the 2 behind the cam gear if it had gone a little longer and the 1 by the oil pump gear, now that 1 was ready to fall out :--) , factory should have done that to start with :-{}
