I'm no expert, but in the 95 and up CTD's, a dowel used during assembly of the engine has had a history of working loose and messing up gears located behind the fan and front engine cover.

I am pretty sure that our trucks are not exempt from the KDP problem and that stinks. But I am not sure how many engines this has consumed in our 1st gen's

Thanks for the responses. It may be possible that some of the folks in this forum are not aware of this problem. Check out the 94 to 98 forum and search under KDP or Dowel Pin. There are a few jigs going around the country that make for a quick and easy fix. Getting on a list is not a problem. Thanks again for the responses.

Wow!

I never thought of it before but this could have been the reason for my engine failing this fall. The machine shop that I brought it to said that the gear for the oil pump was smashed, destroyed. I don't remember the exact word. Maybe my pin dropped and was thrown then wedged in that area. I do not know for sure! I could be very wrong. I will try to find out more information. I just have never been satisfied with any theory of why it failed.

What are the possible methods for fixing this? I am aware of the jig that is out there although not really sure what it does. Any other methods?

:) I just did this fix with the tab, not a bad job although you have to modify the tab a little. Our housings has a step in in that the 96 doesn't have. No big deal. Pin had moved, not much though, only 1\8". Good time to locktite all bolts in there and check the timing marks. Tim

Tim1, what is the tab method? How long does it take? I would like to fix it soon. Not sure how long I would have to wait if I got on a waiting list for the KDP jigs that are going around... .

Thanks, Ken

:) Hey ken, the tab method is putting a small piece of metal over the dowel pin end (afer you seat it) by bolting it to a bolt that is right next to the dowell pin. I made the tab out of some stainless sheet metal and it works good. If you want one, e-mail me your address and i'll mail you one. I'll also send you a list of the part no. s of the parts and tools to do the job, not a bad job. There is a possibility the pin will never move, however there is no way of knowing, since our inner timing covers don't have the hole necked down like the later ones do. Costs to do the job, about 50. 00 in parts. Tim:) :) :) :)

Sorry, how long it takes,, that depends on your mechanical ability and if you have some tools available. Allow yourself a Saturday to do it. I tend to take a little longer because I'm picky! Tim

;) Mel, yes I would, its really not a bad job, except for the 50. 00 for the new seal and gasket. What really bothered me was the housing bolts in there were loose, finger tight. Probably would not have fallen out. With the tab, you know all well in there. Installing the seal was a piece of cake with the housing off. The seal comes with the installer and plastic cone to go over the crankshaft. Of course I stuffed rags in all holes when it was open, my luck, something would fall in there. The fan and shroud comes right off, the belt was a trick getting on though. Lot better job than this nv4500 gonna be! Tim fan nut size 1 7\16"
