In reading about our trucks, I am hearing a lot about the infamous Killer Dowel Pin in the second generation 12 valve motors. I gather from some posts that it can also be a problem on our first generation motors. I do not want anything to happen to my truck, so I am going to ask for your experience and information. Any guidance would be appreciated!

It doesn't seem as if anyone elce is going to jump in here so I will. The KDP is a potential problem on First Gen trucks. I have done 5 fixes including my own. My advice would be to get it done. There is nothing better than the peace of mind that comes from knowing it is no longer a problem. I've seen a case from a '91 and it destroyed the case when it jamed between the case and the drive gear. If it lets go it can grenade your engine.

Thanks Bob,

I have information about how to fix the dowel pin on a second generation 12 valve... the project doesn't scare me a bit. Is there much difference in how to do it on a first generation?

I guess I have been pretty lucky. My '02 has over 300,000 miles on it without problems!

KDP jig - same between 1st and 2nd generation?

Even though I only have 50k miles on mine, I'd really like to "kill" the pin just for piece of mind. Pulling the front cover off is out of the question for me - I just don't have the time or patience to tackle that big of a project right now, and neither of the two local shops I spoke with had any clue what I was talking about.

So far, I haven't seen a definite answer regarding the KDP jig being the same between 1st and 2nd generations. I know the "tab method" requires a different tab because of differences in the case, but I don't know if that - or some other difference - would make a different jig necessary.

The jigs are different because the cases are different. The fix is actually pretty easy to do, and doesn't take very long. When using the jig method, it is not necessary to remove the cover. As I remember it, the fan shroud, fan, belt, fan pulley, and two of the timing case bolts are all that need to be removed.

92 tabbed

:) Hey bud, the tab is slightly different as there is a step in the inner housing. No big deal, though! Mine was out about 1\8 of an inch, don't know for sure that it would have moved any more as it drove back in rather snuggly. The bolts that held the inner housing were a little loose and I lock tited them also. As for a jig for our motors, I don't know. Wasn't that hard to do! Was worth the piece of mind. If you pull the cover, good time to check the timing mark for the injector pump. Tim

Old Smoky - Thanks. I would rather do the jig than pull the cover, so maybe I'll try to see who has a 1st generation kit and get on the list. BTW - I received the BHAF mount on Monday - THANKS!:) - and the filter is on order. I can't wait to get it installed. :D

Tim1 - If the cover is gonna come off, someone else is gonna have to do it. ;) Over the past six months or so I've worked on way too many vehicles (manual to auto swap in friend's Jeep, transfer case swap in my Jeep... . just to name a few), and just changing the oil is more than I want to deal with anymore. :p I know that is a better way to kill the pin - and check the bolts at the same time - but it's more than I'm willing to deal with right now.

KDP JIG

The jig works the same on both the 1st and 2nd gens.

Just on the 1st gens. ,you must be sure the fan mount clears the screw head. If it hits, you must grind off that small area on the screw. On most motors it will clear -- just be aware that its close.

On the 2nd gens the fan mount is offset and there is tons of room.

CPFF,

I hadn't heard that the second gen jig could be used on a first gen. I have used both jigs, and they seemed to be set up slightly differently. But if it does work, it’s good to know.

All the recent talk on this thread has convinced me that I should do mine.

Anybody have a jig they would loan me? Or if you have sketches I can get one (or more) made up. PM me if you do.

Thanks!!!
