After checking several other options, my diesel service bunch is now replacing my injector pump on the 92 3/4 ton with 213k miles. The are aware of the KDP issue and I said while you have the fan shroud etc off let's get the KDP. Said fine. I'm suggesting tabbing it or "peening" it etc and he says we'll just remove it. It isn't necessary after assembly. This doesn't seem quite to fit what I'm hearing. I ve read almost every post in the archive and none say remove it and leave it without one. I've also heard its important to loctite and tighten the timing cover bolts, since they too can come out. I'd apprecieate any advice regarding total removal (pinectomy) of the dowel pin. It doesn't give me a lot of confidence.

Ignore this question. I've since talked with Cummins, and then an older mechanic at the shop. They don't recommend actually removing the pin, and will be loctiting it and peening it.

I asked this question on TDR a long time ago. I, like you, could see no need for it after assembly. I got basically no on removal with no reason as to why not. Left me  . I tried to get them to tab my '99 when the injector pump was replaced at 136,000 (aftermarket shop) and they said don't worry about it. Left me  once again. End result was no fix done and no problems so far.

Cummins makes a tab. Don't peen over the cast aluminum or you are asking for pieces to break off later and the pin to get out anyway. Have them do it right. Tab, longer bolt, red loctite. Also remove, clean, loctite the 4 bolts they can get to, and retighten the 5th that is behind the gear teeth part of the cam gear. It is the lowest down of the 5.

The bolt holes have some play and will let the cover move around. The dowel pins precisely hold the case in position and keep the gears properly meshed. The bolt play is the same that you get on the front cover when attaching it to the case, and the reason for the seal centering tool. Jake
