Hello:



I just bought a truck that just had the KDP fall out (broke the came at the). My question: does the KDP have to be replaced? I'm sure it's somewhere down in the oil pan, but if I do need to replace it, I want to replace it with a new one. Any help/comments would be much appreciated.

I'll answer for the sake of answering, however, the Pastor will boot you over to the 12 valve forum.



No. I'ts not needed. Only used to align the case to block when installed. It can't do anything other than ride there after all hardware is fastened into place. And often times it can't even do that :rolleyes:



Does everyone agree?

I can't say whether it is or is not needed acording to Cummins or DC. What I can say is that it maintains perfect align between the gear case and the block. Since the cam and crank are mounted in the block and the vacuum/steering pump and injector pump are mounted to the case this alignment is critical to maintain proper gear lash.



That said, the bolts may be sufficient to hold it in place without the pin, I don't know. Pesonally I like my pin as long as it is properly restrained.

On edit, I'm refering to the pin in my old truck, not the one in my profile.
 
My thoughts are to replace it. Then do a tab fix. There is a lot of weight hanging on the timing cover with the inj pump and vac and power steering pumps. Also do not forget the amount of force to turn these accessories. The bolts are only torqued at 18 ft lbs. This is not very much for the amount it has to support.

Don't hear of the dowel pin being a problem in any other 5. 9 application do we? School buses/marine in particular. Gotta think that "our" gear case is different/suspect.

The school bus 5. 9 employs a power steering pump mounted to front of the engine and the same injection pump as well as a HUGE air compressor. This thing is solid cast iron, two cylinders, that weighs at least 50lbs. The ps pump mounts directly behind this.



Us bus mechanics don't set around at the banquets moaning about KDP's and who's the latest victim.

I brought this up in a marine forum I participate in... . none of the guys had ever heard of a KDP failure in a marine application.

I think the marine blocks may be built at a different facility. That could account for the difference, or it could be the application/duty cycle/vibration level difference.

Banquet(S)?! How many of these banquets do you all attend?? Is the school board picking up the tab for this??
 
On average... . three per year. Not only do they pay for the meeting ,they pay for lodging/mileage to and fro and my regular salary too:D



I have yet to hear talk of a KDP. I would not be surprised to learn the majority hasn't a clue.



The state of Ohio mandates that a bus mecnic MUST attend x many hours of off site learning. We have spring and fall workshops/banquets and other get-to-gethers.



Just received my plaque for ASE Certified Master School Bus Technician... ... .



That means a pay raise :rolleyes: Actually, it means ASE got a bunch of money and I passed some written tests. Nothing more. The school/State is happy.



We DO discuss how UNHAPPY other saps 'er bus mechanics are with the PowerJoke AKA the 444 engine in a bus fleet. Yet they'll have one parked in their garage, go figure.



Shoulda seen the looks I got when I left the last meet'n early and rolled the coal from my CTD :eek:

As noted above, replace the pin with a new one, and use Loctite 609 (green) after cleaning the hole in the block. Then use a tab or other means to retain it positively.
 
Thanks for all the comments!! Does anyone have a Cummins part number for the pin? When it fell, it did not tear up the front gear cover, only the cam gear and obviously, it broke the cam. Sounds like a relatively simple fix.



Oh and by the way... this is a 1st gen truck (1992 W250). I just bought it the other day... figured I would expand my horizons a bit!

:--) :--) Not so much a relatively simple fix to pull the cam and put a new gear on it. I've had great luck with the parts guys at Cummins getting the parts I need. If it is the same dowel pin as in the later models it is as follows:



New dowel pin #3900257 $1. 88
