For those of you that have not checked your KDP yet, here is a little story that might help get you motivated.

My brother (not a member here) has a 95 dually. (Yes, I know the 2nd gens a more prone to KDP problems) He had an oil leak at the front seal area. I finally talked him into fixing it himself and while that far to pull off the cover and check the pin. Well, as soon as he pulled the fan mount bracket loose, he found his leak. The gear housing was cracked where the pin tried to come through it at. The oil was running down the housing and down over the front seal area. He found the pin laying on a shelf and was a little beat up. Other than the housing, he didn't find any other problems. He got lucky with the gears!

Pulling the cover and fixing the pin or using a jig and stopping it that way is WAY easier and cheaper than waiting for it to show itself. The cam has to be pulled, he did it without mishap but the procedure is a little scary and I know someone will get snake bit one of these times when pulling it. If a tappet falls off the wooden dowel used to hold it up, it will end up in the pan.

Took him all weekend to fix and cost about $375. Got the parts from Cummins SW in Phoenix area.

Moral of the story - FIX THE KDP ASAP!

Good story... thanks.

Just got the NE jig kit on friday... will be doing my son's 94 and his 89 "donor" engine this week.

The 89 will be easy... . it's currently "resting" on the front end of a 95 S-10 ... .

Just a heads up on the Jig method. I did mine and several others but became conserned about problems on 1st Gens with the 10mm bolts holding the gear case to the front of the engine. These bolts have been known to come out causing considerable damage. As part of my spring PM program I decided that I would pull the front cover off and check everything out. I didn't find any loose bolts but it didn't take a lot to break them loose. Four of them were removed cleaned, locktited and reinstalled - the fifth wont come out without removing the cam drive gear but can be loosend with a 10mm open end bent at 45 degrees. BTW my KDP was still nice and snug in its recess.

I post this because Harold Bowers is involved with a '92 that quit running after a bolt came out. It broke the camshaft bent 6 push rods and caused additional damage. If you get to the point where you want to do your KDP I would strongly suggest pulling the front cover off and locktiting those bolts.

I believe the best method is to use the jig and also pull the cover to fix those bolts. Good luck
