Well, I'm wondering if I've been struck by the infamous KDP. I've got a fair amount of oil leaking from the front of the engine, though not enough to make the oil level drop. Just a general covering on the front of the oil pan, some running about half way back along the sides of the pan. I'm guessing if it's not the KDP, I've got a bad front main seal going out. I've got 95K on the truck right now, so if it's the KDP, I guess it'll be under warranty (I hope).

So, how do I check to see it I've got a cracked timing case? I know the crack is always hidden by the idler pulley (or so I've read), but is there any way to check for the crack without tearing the thing apart?

Remove the fan ... and the belt ... . then the pulley ... then there are 4 bolts that attach the fan hub to the block ... pull the fan hub and you will know ... I'd bet on the front seal leaking . .

My gear case gasket failed. I found out by steam cleaning than looking hard. It would not drip from cover only seep so it was hard to find. You could also add some blacklight dye, that what the cummins shop did to confirm my gasket failure, they (Cummins Shop)say it is fairly common and they have replace many of them. $1400. 00 job for $2. 00 gasket.

I often wondered if just removing the cover and tightening the bolts that hold the gear case to the block might be enough to stop a gear case gasket leak. After all there is no oil pressure in that location, it's a straight shot back to the pan. Many folks that have done the KDP tab fix have reported these bolts being loose. I sure as heck would try tightening them before I tore the front of my truck off or paid big bucks for someone else to do it. You still have to take the cover off to replace the front seal, might as well eliminate the only two potential leak areas in that location at once and do the KDP tab fix at the same time.

Pull all that stuff off mentioned above and see if its leaking behind the idler pulley. If it is it might be a KDP problem that didnt bust a big hole but just cracked it. If so clean it good and silicone the poop out of it. Also if its a gasket problem silicone sealer should slow it way down or stop which beats the heck out of pulling the gear case.
