Took my truck to the dealer yesterday because of an oil leak around the front cover. Knowing damn well what happened, I decided to test the technican and let him diagnois the problem. The service manager called me and said they "thought" it was the gasket between the block and the gear cover. I told him he better check again to be sure. He called back later to tell me that I was right. So now I'm gonna have to wait 3 days to get the parts in. Oh well, at least DC is foooting the bill. :) I got lucky being the truck is a 97 with 94,000 mi. For all of you people who havent cured this problem I highly suggest that you do before the same thing happens to you.

It seems like 97 was the year for it to happen to,most trucks that have it fall out are 97's,it seems from those who post here.

Greg,

There is another way to do it. That is to make and install a tab part to block the pin from falling out. It's more work but you don't have to wait for the jig. I think it's a better fix. E-mail me and I will send you the "how to do it" info. -- email address removed --

If the dealer gets the latest design housing, not an old stockpiled one, it will have a restriction to prevent the dowel from falling out. I'd still use green Loctite after cleaning the pin and hole thoroughly with lacquer thinner or Mopar non-chlorinated brake cleaner, or Wurth brake cleaner (something that doesn't have toluene, or xylene in it. )

Try to get them to replace the front crank seal too, and be sure to clean the crank as the seal has to rub on it dry or it will leak. It has a Teflon coating.
