I been searching the forum for information on tabbing the KDP rather than using the jig. I couldn't really find a thread that has info pertianing to the fix, just bits and pieces here and there.

I was wonderin if anyone could provide info like where to buy the kit and/or tab. Links to websites that sell it, list of people that sell it (contacts), and photos if anyone has it. And a description of what the job entails, what you have to do to actually apply this fix. Can the tab be made at home?

I know how the jib works with the air compressor, drill, tap, screw, etc. All of which is outlined in the stick thread in this forum But no solid information on the tab method of fixing the KDP.

Thankx!

Click here for a diagram of how the tab is made. You can also buy one from Piers.

Joe G is the guy you neet to hear from and he will undoubtedly respond but basically you have to remove the fan, fan idler, and timing cover to access the tab. Space is tight and you may choose to remove the fan shroud and radaitor as well but I don't think it will be necessary.

Other than this tab I will also need gaskets to replace when removing the cover?

These?

CM 3918673 $19. 57 Timing Cover Gasket

CM 3804899 $26. 89 Front Crankshaft Oil Seal

What is the thickness of the tab? That's not called out in the drawing, neither is the material.

I get those two bits of info and I'll draw it up nice in aCAD

KDP'D

My dad bought a 95 R-2500 did a bunch of searching the web about goodies and info pertaining to his new pride and he kept on ccoming across kdp. He finally looked into it and decided at 123K he had better pop the cover off and have a look. Did that the pin was out maybe a 1/16" but it wouldn't budge. Tabbed it now he feels alot better. About 1 year later my wife and I bought a 95 R-3500 w/64k and I thought well my dad's was ok at 123k I'm sure mine's ok at half the mileage. WRONG!!! Popped the cover and mine was aout about 3/16" and just barely had to breathe on it with a punch and it slid back in. So you see mileage doesn't really matter as to are you one of the lucky ones with a hogged out pin hole? My dad and I made both our tabs out of old stainless steel trim tabs off a boat, a little noisy to grind, and a little tougher to drill than regular steel but good and springy. My advice to any 12 valve owner if you fixed your KDP I strongly suggest you do!

If you made your tab out of some kind of tempered steel like a saw blade it may crack from vibration and break off. This has happened. Mild steel is best. Any thickness from about 1/8" up is ok. Mine is 1/4" because that is the thickness of a piece of scrap I had.

A trim tab from a boat is not tempered like a saw blade for its design is to help a boat plane out when it is up on step. So therefore the trim tab takes alot of water turbulence, vibration, and abuse, plus it's only about 70 thousands thick. If one lives in an area big on marine one can find a used one easy off a junked fiberglass hull. I might add that I've never seen a trim tab crack or split. They are usually only damaged by hitting something in or out of the water breaking the ram that moves it or bend the trim tab beyond repair.

My 96 has 112500 miles on it,I'm concerned about the pin,not able to do the job myself,a diesel shop want's 400 dollars to do the tab,is that too high,I'm in Mesa Arizona, spend time in Seattle Wa area also, could do in either place. thanks for info. Al

Took me 6 hours in total, made the tab in 15 minutes out of 1/8" mild steel, and went by Joe's instructions for the procedure.

JFountain, It's probably fine at $400. Even if it is $100 high you will wish you had spent that $100 in a heart beat as soon as this thing gets you while you think about how, when and where to get it done. To every one who is on the fence or has'nt got this done yet, don't wait!!! as many will tell you the experiance of a KDP coming loose is a pain in the a** and wallet. Cheers

KDP cost

Just bought my 2nd '95 2500 w/ 67,000m and the previous owner got bit by the KDP @ 65,000. I bought the truck in Tucson and Desert Diesel had repaired it. In reading the invoice, it cost $660, they replaced the case w/ later model w/ 'blind' KDP hole. But what caught me off guard, was the fact that the invoice said they removed the cam to change the cover. Reading this, I thought it was a mistake and called the service place for clarification. I assumed they meant that they removed the cam GEAR. . Well all you diesel pros out there prolly already know, but I didn't. . The cam gear is integral w/ the cam!! Now that is a dumb idea!! As much as I love the Cummins, that one has me mystified. I work on small aircraft engines and the cam is always bolted on the end of the cam and never causes any probs. .

Anyway w/ the new style case, I can sleep at night and and now I know why so many folks talk about the 'Tab' or 'Jig' fix and don't just replace the case! All things considered, $660 for that job wasn't too terribly bad.

Thank's loads for the kdp info,I want to get the fix before leaving Arizona for Florida and back to Seattle with my 5th wheel in tow,my baby will be working hard for about 5000 miles, don't want her to quit. Cheers,Al

JFountain - Just had Fred @ Desert Diesel Parts use the Jig on my 97 this past weekend. Only $85. He's located in west Phoenix. Great guy to work with.
