Well, I had my truck into the stealer... uh, dealer, for what was likely the last time, I hit 100K on the way home. I'd developed a fair sized oil leak from the front of the engine, it was covered under warranty since I was still under 100K by 52 miles.
It turned out to be (according to the report) a leaking front crank seal, leaking timing cover gasket, and a leaking oil pan gasket. They said they replaced them all and supposedly the leaks are fixed.
While they were in there, I asked if they could check the dowel pin and do the Cummins fix (clean off, pound back in, and put in wicking locktite). They said they had done one dowel pin that had come out and trashed the case, so they knew what it was, but hadn't heard of the "fix". No big surprise, but I asked them if they'd do it anyway.
Well, I couldn't get a straight answer to whether or not they put the locktite on, all they kept saying was, "We checked the pin and it was fine. " I forgot to ask them to check the tightness of the bolts inside.
Anyway, me being the untrusting sort that I am, I'm eventually going to do one of the TDR fixes, I tend to like the washer tab fix better, but since my pin is apparently in place after 100K, maybe the bolt fix is OK, or maybe I shouldn't worry about it at all. There's still the possibility of loose bolts in there though, so I'm still tending towards the washer tab.
I do have one question for those who have done this before. Since I have a brand new crank seal, can I pull the cover and reuse the seal? I suppose it'd be cheap insurance just to go ahead and get a new one...
