I would not use the drill and pray kit.



Our trucks also have trouble with the camshaft retainer bolts coming loose. We had two members a few years back that had camshafts broken when the retainer bolts came out. When I did my KDP the retainer bolts were loose. When I say loose they had no torque on them what so ever. I screwed one out with my fingers.
 
DC doesn't sell a tab kit. If you talk to them most likely they wouldn't let on like they have ever heard of a KDP problem.



The tab kit for a 2nd gen is different also.



There is one place selling 1st gen tab kits. But I can't remember their name. Most of us just stake them in.
 
This is one of those projects that once you get in there,you look at it and go "is that all there is to this?"

Now, putting a new front seal in the timing cover while you are there sounded easier than it was. :)

Peen it for heavens sake!!! Moab is right, it's nothing to be afraid of. Just take care of a few things while you're there, antifreeze change, new front seal and front cover gasket from Cummins, remove/clean/loctite/18ftlb torque all bolts inside the case, then PEEN the dowel hole.
 
Yes, stake it in place... I'd argue that it's better than tabbing and it's free, but that's not the point here.

Use a flat ended punch (or hardened bolt), maybe 1/4 dia, approx 1/3 of the punch over the hole. Give it a couple of decent whacks with a 16 oz hammer making sure some material is diplaced into the hole (doesn't need to be much). Repeat 3 (or 4) places around the hole as evenly as you can (no measuring allowed) and you will be as good as it gets.

I staked the 97 also. I was going to tab it but it had a step (raised boss area) that made tabbing a bit more complicated... so I staked it. The 98 came already tabbed.
