My 2001. 5 has the fixed case, but I have heard of many 2001's that still did not. The best thing you can do is pull the timing cover off and check to be sure.

Cowboy, my 99 with 181k developed a small oil leak at the t-case to block right below the water pump. I figured I'd get the KDP tab kit KILLER DOWEL PIN KIT ('89-'93 and '98. 5-'02 DODGE)-Dodge Cummins Diesel Truck Accessories – Geno’s Garage
from Geno's and go for it. The dowel in my truck was solid, didn't budge a bit when I tapped on it with a drift and hammer. But, since I was there anyway it got tabbed, out came the other hidden bolts, cleaned threads/holes lock-tight and tightened up. New seal for the crank (came with kit) and put it all back together. Cheap insurance. Took a good day for me cause I took the rad out and cleaned it in and out.

If you search around on here you can find a part # for the tab from cummins. It cost a couple of $$ - way cheaper than what Geno's charges. You can also drill a hole in the aluminum and use a set screw and red lock tite. It will be a tight fit with the radiator and all, but I would rather cuss a little at the tight spot then drop $70 for $10 worth of material.

While Cummins did address the problem before then it is impossible to know whether a particular engine was the timing gear case with the stepped hole until the front cover is pulled. There have been documented cases of late 2nd gens having failures of the KDP.

Godspeed,
Trent
