There actually seems, to me anyway, to be three cases. The old style 1 (non-bossed hole), old style 2 (bossed hole), and the new improved 24V case (bossed and stepped hole).
Mine was a 1999 truck with a 10/98 engine build date. It did have the improved case. I taped the pin back in about 0. 05" (if I remember right) and cleaned out the bore real well. Then I used wicking green loc-tite anyway... even though it was stepped. I'd say I'm good for a few million miles now.
The problem with the old case that has the bossed hole is that you cant really use the tab method. A flat tab under the case bolt nearest the KDP hole wont be able to cover the hole. So maybe the jig will work better in that case. Or perhaps if you had the front cover off, you could drill a hole in it directly over the pin location and install a bolt (of the exact right length) with a nut on the backside. The bolt would protrude into the KDP bore. That would keep the pin from moving for sure... but it will require removal of the front cover and you will have to find a way to locate exactly where to drill the front cover.
