Stupid Question?

Chugger Diesels

I've only been a member about 2 weeks, and dying to get a CTD in my truck. I go through alot of the forums reading about everyone's trucks. This entire website kicks. Of all of the things that I'm still trying to figure out, the #1 of all of them has to be: what is the KDP? I build the engines and I still haven't a clue. I'm sure there will be more questions to come, especially when I finally get ahold of a CTD.

KDP is our shorthand for "Killer Dowel Pin". It is one of the alignment dowels that guide the timing cover to the block on the front of the engine. On all 12-valve engines this dowel pin can work it's way out of the block and through the hole in the timing cover and fall into the cam gear.

At this point it "Kills" the timing cover if you're lucky, or "kills" the motor if you're not lucky.

Most of the time it breaks the timing cover and falls into the oil pan which is a royal PITA since you have to take the whole front of the engine apart including removing the camshaft to replace the timing cover.

Once in a while it will manage to get itself between the cam gear and crank gear which usually bends the cam and/or crank as well as cracking the block.

If your truck hasn't had the fix done then it's one of the first things that I'd recommend you do. Mine was at least 1/2 way out at 82k when I bought my truck.

Thanks for your explanantion. I don't have a CTD yet, but I'm looking for one if you can find me one. 12valve at a "descent" price.
